For @ious.studio , the real challenges in 3D-printed ceramics are assembly, cost, standards, and repeatability.

The studio, which used @3dwasp ’s production infrastructure in Italy in 2024 and won second prize at the 2026 SaloneSatellite Awards ( @isaloniofficial ) is now building its own production and research infrastructure in Buenos Aires.

Designworldnews asked the studio’s founders, Sol Sánchez Cimarelli and Agustín Ros, what needs to change for 3D-printed ceramics to move from prototype to real building applications.

What if the future of work was smaller, quieter and closer to home?

Anne’s Art Studio in Salisbury is only 31 square metres, but it opens up a much larger question.

Designed by @richmondbellarchitects for artist Anne Terselius Claridge, the studio sits just a few steps from the house — close enough to remain part of everyday life, separate enough to create its own rhythm.

In our latest feature, we look at the studio as more than a private workspace. Could small, independent rooms like this become part of a wider way of working — connected by shared gardens, workshops and social spaces rather than a conventional office?

Can design create mental space?

A book café's value certainly isn't just its bookshelves.

As our cities become faster and more crowded, places that offer a quieter rhythm are attracting renewed interest. Cafe Marks in Minsk ( @marks.books.minsk ) is one of them. Rather than relying on visual spectacle, the project focuses on atmosphere through natural timber, mineral flooring and carefully integrated lighting.

More than a place to have coffee, it reflects a broader evolution in hospitality design, where cafés are becoming spaces for reading, working, meeting and simply spending time.

Some buildings reveal themselves from a distance. La Vallée Verte does exactly the opposite.

With its street-facing façade, it looks like one of Bordeaux's new residential blocks. Light grey ceramic panels, sharp lines, and a highly controlled mass... Before stepping inside, it is almost impossible to guess the building's real story.

With this project, MVRDV ( @mvrdv ) does not completely abandon the classic European apartment block. Instead, it transforms the familiar typology from within.

Can different ways of living exist without being shaped by a single architectural formula?

Located on the shores of Lake Edersee in Germany, Ways of Life Campus explores exactly that question.

What began as an idea in 2017 has evolved into a real campus. Today, eight buildings have been completed, while three more are still under construction. Rather than becoming a finished destination, the project continues to grow as an ongoing architectural experiment.

Here, the real project is not the campus itself. It is the dialogue between architecture and the landscape.

Nineteen architects respond to the same question through different materials, cultures and design philosophies. The result is not a single architectural language, but a collection of diverse ideas.

Because sometimes, diversity itself becomes a design strategy.

What if the most valuable material in a building is the building itself?

Woods Bagot's transformation of Melbourne's Younghusband Woolstore suggests a different approach to sustainability. Instead of replacing existing materials, the project worked with them. Painted signs, steel-framed windows, timber columns and the original roof structure were carefully preserved and adapted for contemporary use.

More than a warehouse conversion, the project raises a broader question about the future of existing buildings and the value already embedded within them.

Can biomaterials make the transition from the laboratory to architecture?

Rice husks in Spain. Olive pits in Cyprus. Wood fibres in Finland.

A growing number of biomaterial startups are becoming commercial products from agricultural and industrial waste. But what is missing?

Production capacity, certification processes, supply chains and investment determine whether a material remains a research project or reaches the market.

Building a new structure is no longer only a design decision; it is also a choice.

Many projects move forward by using what already exists. The structure stays, the function changes. Adaptive reuse becomes a practical solution.

Working with existing structures means dealing with constraints, but it also opens up new spatial possibilities.

What matters is not only what we design, but how we choose to work with what already exists.

Architecture changes direction here.

Architecture has long been obsessed with producing the new.
New buildings, new forms, new projects.

But the Venice Biennale 2026 pauses to look at something else this year: what already exists.

The theme is “repair”.
Not simply as restoration, but as a way of thinking about how we live with existing systems, structures and materials.

Many of the works across the biennale reflect this shift. Raw surfaces, unfinished textures, fragile installations and temporary structures appear throughout the exhibition.

Through Koyo Kouoh’s curatorial approach, the biennale feels quieter, more layered and more human this year. Instead of one dominant statement, different stories and perspectives sit alongside one another.

And perhaps that is what makes this edition particularly interesting.
The conversation is no longer only about what architecture produces, but how it chooses to engage with the world around it.

Material Matters Copenhagen 2026 takes place between June 18–20 during 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen.

What stands out at the fair is no longer perfectly polished surfaces. Agricultural waste, natural fibres, raw textures and visible production processes are becoming far more present across contemporary design.

Many of the participating studios are working simultaneously with local waste systems, laboratory research and digital production technologies. You can also see how biomaterials and 3D printing systems are beginning to work together more naturally.

Perhaps the biggest change is this: materials are no longer trying to hide how they are made.

In the Dornbracht Atelier Edition The Rock ( @dornbracht_official ) series, selected stones such as Granite Antika Marble are chosen, and each stone is processed individually, differing significantly from metalworking.

This individual work prevents material degradation, ensuring the final shape of the handle is perfect. This meets Dornbracht’s extremely strict quality limits. This process is challenging because stone hardness varies, pushing the boundaries of precision engineering.

After shaping, hand polishing requires great skill. Chemical sealants are not used; this preserves the stone's genuine texture and feel. All these steps combine complete quality control with a personalized, hand-finished aesthetic, fulfilling the promise of tactile design
