“Issey Miyake and Twelve Black Girls” was a Spring/Summer 1976 performance in Osaka where Issey placed Grace Jones at the center, marking the beginning of a lifelong creative partnership.

Before then, 27 agencies had rejected Jones for runway work. Miyake was the first to see her potential, reframing the runway from a simple catwalk into physical theater. He showed her how to ground her body using traditional Japanese theater stances, which Grace brought into her legendary live performances, turning his designs into extensions of her persona. by @despairbooks

For three years, Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase documented his wife, Yōko, falling out of love with him.

In his photo series From Window, Fukase photographed Yōko leaving for work each morning from their fourth-floor apartment in Tokyo. The project began in the summer of 1973 and continued until their divorce in 1976.

“He has only seen me through the lens,” Yōko said of her husband. “I believe that all the photographs of me were unquestionably photographs of himself.” by @despairbooks

“Inferno; Alexander McQueen” (2015) images by Kent Baker

Inferno is an intimate portrait of Alexander McQueen’s seminal AW96/97 show, Dante, named after the 14th-century Italian poet famous for the Divine Comedy.

The show took place inside a candlelit church. On his choice of venue, McQueen said, “I think religion has caused every war in the world, which is why I showed in a church.” The presentation included bootlegged war imagery that he had his friend print at Central Saint Martins, and a skeleton was placed in the front row.
He loved the hauntedness of the location and his dog, Minter, had to be taken home before the show started because he wouldn’t stop barking at the empty spaces.

“If you leave a show without emotion, then I’m not doing my job properly. I don’t want you to walk out feeling like you’ve just had Sunday lunch. I want you to be repulsed or exhilarated – as long as it’s an emotion.” by @despairbooks
