Setting expectations on day one changes everything 🩺📋

As a preceptor, I’ve learned that clear boundaries and structure are the best ways to protect clinic flow and maximize learning for NP students. Here is my exact blueprint for setting expectations early:

1️⃣ Start with expectations: Lay the groundwork immediately so everyone is on the same page.

2️⃣ Structure patient presentations: Let students know how you want cases presented (e.g., SOAP style, concise and organized) to keep clinic running smoothly.

3️⃣ Require a proposed plan: Ask students to come to you not just with the problem, but with their own preliminary assessment and plan. It builds critical thinking faster than anything else.

4️⃣ Manage time and questions: Set ground rules for when to ask questions versus when to hold them so you stay on schedule without cutting into teaching moments.

Feeling like your days never end as a new NP? 😩

Charting can be a BIG part of the reason.

When you’re new, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that can make documentation take longer than you expect:

1️⃣ Your workflow is still new

2️⃣ You’re still figuring out what actually needs your time

3️⃣ Every EHR and clinic workflow is different

4️⃣ Your templates aren’t optimized yet
Learning the medicine, the EHR, and time management all at once is a lot. But here is one thing you can do today.

💡 Build a “Dot Phrase” Bank for Your Top 5 Most Common Visits.

Instead of trying to automate everything at once, pick your 5 most common chief complaints (e.g., hypertension follow-up, URI, diabetes check) and create pre-formatted HPI and Plan templates for just those five.

That alone can help save you some time and streamline your notes while you’re still building your routine!

Save this for your next shift, and tell me below: 💬 What chief complaint takes you the longest to chart on right now?

One of the hardest parts of primary care isn’t prescribing the medication. It’s explaining when a prescription isn’t indicated. 👏🏼

Not every respiratory infection needs antibiotics. 🦠💊

Antibiotic stewardship matters — and sometimes the best clinical decision is knowing when not to prescribe.

Antibiotics treat bacterial infections, not viruses. Sometimes the right approach is supportive care, education, and reassurance. 😅🦠

Going from RN → FNP is exciting… but there are some things you just don’t understand until you’re actually in the role.

I thought becoming an NP would mean I’d finally feel confident because I had the degree, the clinical experience, and years of nursing behind me.

Reality? There’s a whole new learning curve.

Your first NP job teaches you things school can’t. You’re navigating a different level of responsibility, learning how to think and function in a new role, and figuring out what kind of provider you want to become.

And if you’ve ever thought, “Why do I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing?” — you’re not alone.

I’ve been there. And looking back, there are definitely things I wish someone had told me before I started my first NP job.

If you’re a student or new NP, what’s the ONE thing you wish someone had prepared you for? 👇🏼

A quick reminder for all current & future NP students!

COMMUNICATION is the ultimate pro tip.

Preceptors know that life as a graduate student is a massive balancing act. Work schedules shift, clinical requirements change, and unexpected things come up—we completely get it!

If there’s one habit that sets successful students apart, it’s proactive communication.

Quick tips for smooth precepting:

Give early heads-up: If your schedule needs to adjust or a shift gets moved, let your preceptor know as soon as possible so clinic flow can be planned accordingly.

Keep the loop open: A quick text or email updates your preceptor and keeps your clinical objectives on track.

Build the habit now: Clear, timely communication isn’t just about scheduling—it’s a core professional skill you’ll use daily as an APRN with colleagues, staff, and patients.

Preceptors are in your corner and want to see you succeed! A little communication goes a long way toward building a great clinical experience. ✨

Save this for your upcoming clinical rotations!
