✨I’ve experienced more beauty in places people warned me about— the “dangerous” countries sometimes gave me the most peace.

2. I’ve become more sensitive to how people are portrayed in the Global South. Sometimes what’s called “authentic” is actually just othering in disguise. There’s a better way to connect—with honour, not hierarchy.

✨I don’t often see people who look like me when I travel. It’s isolating—but it’s also empowering and has taught me how to relate with people from all over the world.

4. Budget travel isn’t always glamorous—it can be draining trying to track every coin. But it’s shown me discipline and gratitude.

✨My trip to Asia was the loneliest I’ve ever felt—but maybe that loneliness was a mirror. Latin America feels freer somehow, and I’m learning to listen to what that’s revealing in me.

6. Travel romances are beautiful for some—but I’ve learned they’re not for me. My heart craves depth, not detours.

✨Connecting deeply and saying goodbye days later? It hurts. But it also reminds me how quickly love can grow, even in passing.

8. Travel taught me how to honour my boundaries. I rarely drink, I’m not into EDM (honestly why is this a music genre!?), and I no longer say yes just to belong. That used to be hard. Now it’s freedom.

✨I’ve had to humble myself! Travel isn’t a personality trait that makes me better than others. Some people are called to stay in one place and build, not roam. And that calling deserves the same respect.

In one of the most visited cities in Mexico, Chiapas, this isn’t unusual. Whilst there I fell sick due to water contamination and learnt that a particular soft drink company worth billions of dollars has pumped so much water out of this city to the point of scarcity.

There were days taps ran dry and my hostel would put up ‘no water’ notices. Restaurants were out and most importantly, homes. No water at all.
And those who can afford it rely on pipas like this when supply cuts out. But major corporations continue operating in the region, extracting huge amounts of water. As travellers, this is an aspect of travel we often bypass. The blatant corruption.
