2025 by @destinypinto
Accessories are often the most fun part of getting dressed. A great bag, a pair of earrings, or the right sunglasses can transform an entire outfit. Designer Destiny Pinto (@destinypinto) believes that same creative freedom should extend to another category of accessories rarely designed with style in mind: assistive devices. While studying at university, Pinto was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and began wearing compression gloves to manage the pain and swelling in her hands. The gloves worked, but their clinical look made them feel like something meant to be hidden. As a student, Pinto started experimenting with ways to redesign the device she relies on regularly to feel stylish, personal, and actually fun to wear. That idea eventually became By Destiny Pinto (@bydestinypinto), a UK-based label that reimagines assistive devices like compression gloves, ostomy bags, and hearing aids through a fashion lens. At the link in bio, we spoke with Pinto about turning a personal health challenge into a brand, the scrappy process behind her first designs, and why disability should never limit self-expression. By Destiny Pinto accessories on @financialtimes @fthtsi Shot by Bea Dero @directordero “It is not disability or illness itself that creates a barrier to style, but something more like a failure of attitude.” “For Pinto, it is about bringing a contemporary, “scroll-stopping” aesthetic to these indispensable items, many of which go viral on social media long before users recognise that they are designed with disability in mind. […] Pinto’s work is an exhilarating blend of what could seem to be style on one hand and medical functionality on the other. Yet even a cursory glance at the history of fashion reveals this to be a false opposition. Glasses are a prime example of how a disability aid can become a desirable accessory in its own right.“ Written by Daisy Lafarge (@daisylafarge) Credits for campaign Imagery: Photographed and Directed by: Bea Dero (@directordero) Creative direction by: Destiny Pinto (@destinypinto) Location: Happy Hair and Beauty (@happyhairandbeauty.co) Models & accessories: Chelsea Lockwood (@itsjustlockwood) wearing the leopard print ostomy bag cover & the Adison shoulder bag attached to her stroller Narges Kandabi-Kaleh (@happyhairandbeauty.co) wearing the suede ruched compression glove set & the Adison bag as a cross body in Black Marta Burralho (@lifeonmars_xo) wearing the red lace ostomy bag cover & the Adison bag as a shoulder bag Katouche Goll (@itskatouche) wearing the Adison bag attached to her mobility scooter using the detachable straps Tilly Lockey (@tilly.lockey) wearing the Adison bag as a clutch “there is so much more to disability than meets the eye, and so much scope for designing, playfully and daringly, beyond the normative limits of the mythical “able” body.” Bydestinypinto.com to shop Full online article in my bio 🔗 by @destinypinto
