I arrived in Israel on October 5th, 2023 so excited. I was in my 2nd home and my cousin and his fiancée were supposed to get married the following week. On Friday the 6th, we went to the Shuk, the market was alive with people and beautiful colors as it always is before Shabbat. I went to the beach and had Shabbat dinner with family, a perfect day. I woke up on October 7th to my brother & parents watching the news detailing what could only be described as Israeli 9/11. The day went on filled with uncertainty and fear.
The evening of October 7th is when the rocket launching started and I happened to be on the phone with friends in the US who could hear.
The resilience and community I witnessed during this atrocity started in that moment. Neighbors in the apartment building we stayed at were so kind & inviting. We would see each other in the hallways or in the bomb shelter during red alerts. I’d pet their dogs, say hi to their kids. The next day, people started to gather in the city to volunteer to buy/donate materials and package them to be sent to civilians and soldiers who were bearing the brunt of the attack. As it always is in Israel, it was beautiful chaos. So much tenacity and passion to help. The girl who took me under her wing while volunteering was named Dahlia. The same name as my Savta (grandmother) who was born in Israel & died there. She held me in her arms when the rocket alerts went off. My very spiritual savta loved to talk about signs from the universe & that one wasn’t very subtle.
The streets were bare, a few people walking around here and there. Going to the beach was peaceful for a few minutes before more rocket alarms sounded. My cousin Alec and Danielle made the decision to postpone the wedding.
Flights were impossible to find but we left for Athens. Leaving was the hardest part. Being able to help and feel a part of was more meaningful than I ever knew. That feeling keeps me warm now. This war on information is worse. People I thought were smart & caring have shown to be the opposite. It’s immensely difficult to see people desecrate something I hold so dear.
