Ever wonder what the Earth looked like billions of years ago? Lake Huron can take you there.

The Middle Island Sinkhole was created by groundwater eroding away the limestone lakebed. The groundwater is high in sulfur and low in oxygen, creating conditions that scientists believe resembles the planet's oceans more than 2 billion years ago.

The sinkhole is home to vibrant microbial mats believed to resemble some of the first life to emerge on the planet.

In September of 2026 we teamed up with @hiddenbelowgreatlakes to send an underwater drone into the sinkhole and livestream what we found. Check out the full exploration at the link in bio!

Hello, Detroit! Yesterday, Detroit PBS & 90.9 WRCJ broke ground on the new Fred and Barbara Erb Public Media Campus in Detroit's Milwaukee Junction.

This will be a future home for in-person events that bring our community and the families we serve together.

With support from the Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation, @waynecountymichigan, and other generous donors, we’ve reached 75% of our fundraising goal.

Yesterday, our community came together to break ground on the new Fred and Barbara Erb Public Media Campus, opening in Detroit's Milwaukee Junction neighborhood in fall 2027!

This new campus will be a home for journalism, education, arts and culture, and community engagement in Detroit.

We also announced a $2 million investment from Wayne County, building on the Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation's $7.5 million challenge grant, which our community matched a year ahead of schedule.

With 75% of our $40 million fundraising goal secured, we are well on our way to making that opening a reality.

The program featured:

Fred Nahhat: Detroit PBS SVP, Production and program emcee
Rich Homberg: Detroit PBS President & CEO
Shaun Wilson: Detroit PBS Board Chair-Elect
Elizabeth Erb: Next Gen Advisory Board Member, Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation
Warren Evans: Wayne County Executive
Ollette Boyd: Former Detroit PBS CFO & COO

Thank you to every donor and partner helping bring this vision to life. To learn more, visit detroitpbs.org/campus by @detroitpbs

On June 6, 2026, @hiddenbelowgreatlakes explored the deepest area of the Great Lakes for the first time in 40 years.

Superior Maximus is more than 1,300 feet beneath the surface of Lake Superior. While scientists have studied its inhabitants indirectly with gill nets, it's only been directly observed a handful of times.

In 2026, filmmakers and explorers Zach Melnick and Yvonne Drebert deployed a high-tech underwater drone to explore this deep zone.

Get the full story and watch the full expedition at the link in bio.
