This series started with a promise to myself:

“No matter how lost I may feel, I will always try to find my way back to loving myself again.”

For @antwerpart with @deussingrid , that promise became a larger piece made from 120 razorblades, marking 120 days since the breakup and the feeling of losing a version of myself I thought I knew.

The blades are cut and mounted perpendicular to the mirror.

From the front, they almost disappear.

But when you move to the side, their reflections come together and form small hearts.

I liked that contradiction.

The thing that looks almost invisible from one angle becomes something completely different from another.

Something sharp becomes a symbol of love.

Something fragmented becomes an image.

And maybe that’s part of what this work is about for me too.

Not everything is visible from the front.

Sometimes you have to change your position before you can see what was there all along.

The piece became less about the breakup itself and more about trying to find myself again through the reflections that came after. taken in Antwerp, Belgium by @deussingrid

What a wonderful experience ELSEWHERE by the sea has been.

Three more days to visit us at U.Knokke — and I’ll be there from tomorrow onwards

Tomorrow we welcome you for an early aperitif during the Night of the Zoute.

DEUSS Gallery ELSEWHERE is pleased to present a selection of contemporary artists at U.Knokke, including works by internationally acclaimed Hong Kong photographer and filmmaker Wing Shya, whose iconic imagery helped shape films such as In the Mood for Love, 2046 and Happy Together.

Between memory and imagination, images linger — dissolving, shifting, quietly transforming.

This summer, DEUSS Gallery ELSEWHERE presents the work of Gert Motmans.

Working with analogue photography, collage, and found or archival materials, Motmans creates intimate compositions that unfold like visual poems. Fragments of 35mm film, vintage imagery, handwritten traces and delicate papers come together through a slow, tactile process, exploring themes of memory, longing, queer desire and the quiet beauty of what fades.

His visual language moves between presence and absence, figuration and abstraction, past and present. Young male figures, nocturnal landscapes and nature as a place of refuge reappear as subtle motifs, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where not everything needs to be explained.

Gert Motmans has found a wonderful home at In-Dependance Gallery @in_dependancegallery — a gallery I deeply respect.

But this summer, he’s joining us.

Wing Shya.

That’s how we met — I was producing a shoot for Joyce Hong Kong with Dries Van Noten at Arthur House in Antwerp.

Wing Shya — photographer, filmmaker, visual poet. The eye behind the unforgettable visual language of In the Mood for Love, 2046, and Happy Together.

His photographs don’t simply document a moment.
They make you feel it.

Some encounters stay with you.

Ten years later, this one still does.
