Rice doesn't need to stay flooded all season. 🌾 Swipe to see why 👉

When I first read this, I was surprised too. Most of us picture rice growing in standing water, and many farmers keep their fields flooded because more water feels safer.

But there's a proven method called Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD). You let the water level drop, re-water when it falls about 15 cm below the soil surface, and refill to about 5 cm.

The research behind it:
📊 ~34% average water saved, from a global analysis of 437 studies
📊 23–33% saved in Indian studies (ICAR)
📊 15.3% saved with comparable yield in a Punjab Agricultural University field trial

So why isn't everyone doing it? Because it's checked by hand with a field tube, usually every day, and that's easy to skip.

That's the gap Bhumiputra Sevak® is trying to close: a soil sensor makes the decision instead.

"पानी कम, फसल वही।"

💾 Save this, and share it with someone who farms.

Rice fields drink more water than they need. Here's what I built to change that 👇

🌾 More than 60% of India's irrigation water comes from groundwater
💧 Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) saves water and is proven by IRRI
⏰ But it's checked by hand, every day

Bhumiputra Sevak® automates it:
✅ Soil sensor reads moisture
✅ Below 20% → pump ON
✅ 3 cm of water → pump OFF
✅ 3-hour safety cutoff

In our 9-week field trial, the automated plot used ~20% less irrigation water than a continuously flooded plot.

One site, one season, so it's just the beginning. 🚀

Built in Class 8, for farmers. Follow the build. 🌱

Can a machine save water without anyone checking the field every day?

We tested it. 🌾

Two identical 0.25-acre rice plots. Same rice variety, same fertiliser, same care. The only difference was how they were watered.

🔵 Plot A: continuous flooding, the usual way
🟢 Plot B: Bhumiputra Sevak®, automated AWD

How Plot B worked:
1️⃣ A soil sensor checks moisture
2️⃣ When it drops below 20%, the pump turns ON
3️⃣ At 3 cm of standing water, the pump turns OFF
4️⃣ A 3-hour safety cutoff guards against failures

The result after 9 weeks: Plot B used ~20% less irrigation water. 💧

To be honest about the limits: this was one site, one season, during the vegetative stage only, and we didn't measure yield. The next step is a full-season trial with more measurements.

More water feels like more safety. That's what a rice farmer near Gorakhpur once told my father, while I stood beside them at the edge of his field.

He wasn't careless. He just had no way to know when his field actually needed water.

Here's the bigger picture 👇
💧 More than 60% of India's irrigation water comes from groundwater.
🌾 Many rice fields stay flooded all season.
📏 A proven method called Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) lets the field dry a little before re-watering, and it's backed by IRRI.
⏰ But AWD is checked by hand, with a tube in the ground, every single day.

So I started asking: what if the field could tell us when it's thirsty?

That question became Bhumiputra Sevak®.

"खेत खुद बताए कि उसे पानी कब चाहिए।"

Follow along as I share how it works, what we tested, and what I'm learning.

Proud to share that I've just completed the YTS+ (Young Technology Scholars) program at Plaksha University — and I did it as the youngest student there, heading into Class 8, while the program is designed for Class 9–12 students.

Two weeks of immersive learning, research talks, and hands-on projects at one of India's most exciting tech universities. It was intense, eye-opening, and honestly — life-changing.

Research Talks that stayed with me:

- Prof. Arshdeep Sidhu (Plaksha University) — Introduced us to the world of Protein Biochemistry. Understanding how proteins fold, function, and drive biological processes was mind-bending for someone my age.

- Prof. Rajkumar S. Pant (IIT Bombay) — His talk on Aerospace Engineering made me think about flight, design, and engineering in completely new ways.

- Prof. Ravi Jasuja (Harvard Medical School / BWH) — A session connecting translational research and discovery to real-world healthcare impact.

Beyond the lectures, what stayed with me was the culture — of curiosity, of asking "why", of solving problems from first principles.

Being surrounded by students 2–4 years older than me pushed me to think bigger, ask better questions, and not be afraid to be the youngest in the room.

If you're a student who loves science, tech, or just wants to understand how the world works — YTS+ at Plaksha is an experience I'd recommend without hesitation.

Thank you Plaksha University for having me.

We’re thrilled to share that Devaagyh Dixit, a Class VII student of CMS Cambridge Gomti Nagar Extension Campus, has been awarded the ‘Bronze CREST Award’ by the British Science Association (UK) for developing ‘AETHER-SCAN’, an advanced drone-based pollution monitoring system that analyses air quality in real time and generates 3D pollution maps. For this groundbreaking innovation, Devaagyh has been honoured with a ‘Silver Badge’ at the national level in the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO). His research and in-depth study on pollution mapping, along with the AETHER-SCAN project, have also been published in the International Journal for Multidisciplinary Research, adding another remarkable milestone to his achievements. AETHER-SCAN uses smart sensors and AI-enabled 3D mapping technology. The system automatically transmits pollution-related data to government agencies via a mobile app, enabling immediate environmental action. At a time of rising pollution levels, this innovation has proven to be extremely timely and impactful. Devaagyh’s achievements extend far beyond AETHER-SCAN. In 2024, he developed ‘BHUMISEVAK’, an irrigation management system that helps farmers optimise water usage and increase crop productivity. This project has already been trademarked, and its patent process is underway. Along with his scientific accomplishments, Devaagyh has excelled in music, sports, and various other fields, earning 9 world records, including the Guinness World Record and 26 national records. We at CMS take immense pride in nurturing young innovators who are not just dreaming of a better world, but building it. #CMS #CMSeducation #CMSStudents #AcademicExcellence OutstandingTeachers InspiringLeaders HighAchiever CMSActivity by @devaagyhdixit
