Maybe I’ve posted about the passing of Dolly Parton too much already but 9 to 5 came into my life last year during a difficult life chapter—when I was still growing into it (It’s possible I still am). This song became a lot of things: A prayer. A mantra. A rebellion? A hope for sure. I think its meaning continues to expand for me. This is a little clip I snuck in during our sitzprobe.

Between this song and the last song in the show (the hardest vocal challenge I’ve ever *attempted* to tackle, to be sure. Maybe I’ll post that when I’m feeling braver but today is not that day. Ms. Parton’s vocal register sat REAL HIGH), Dolly’s lyrics and melodies rang so true to me.

The women in 9 to 5 get to be silly and angry and sexy and tired and hopeful and vengeful and supportive and joyful and real—which was an invigorating experience when I had the personal and professional bandwidth to take it in. I think that has everything to do with who Dolly Parton was and the strength and authenticity she brought to everything she did. I am forever grateful. by @devanmaureen

And with that, the 2025-2026 tutu diaries season comes to an end.

It’s an honor (and tbh, sometimes a stressful responsibility depending on the hour/how it’s going) to design and make costumes for these incredible artist-athletes so they look and feel their best, and to ensure the costumes move to match all the superhuman things these young people can do and highlight what makes each dancer unique.

Total tally: 20 costumes (1 group costume, 1 tank not pictured), 2000+ rhinestones, countless pins, ♾️ thread clippings all over my house and clothes.

(And for the record, since I say it a lot, sewing is math)

1962: My grandpa with the car he built, my aunt hanging out the window in the back seat, my mom posing in the green pedal pushers, and my uncle standing next to her.

I can’t stop looking at this picture for a lot of reasons. I love it so much. I know it’s blurry and that’s part of why I love it.

I knew my grandpa was good with cars and motors but I just learned about this one—a Crosley. But I didn’t know the full extent of his talents or his handiwork. It’s a beautiful car.

My grandpa passed when I was 4, and so my memories of him are very limited. I remember him with much lighter hair by that time (and always with goldfish crackers in his shirt pocket for me and my cousin), but here, with his dark hair and eyebrows, it’s much easier to see a first-generation son of immigrants from Eastern Europe proudly taking a picture with his squirrelly, adorable, very American kids and the car he built with his own hands, in his own garage, on the street outside his house in Midwest America. One of my aunts (not pictured here because she wasn’t born yet), still lives in this house and the street still looks the same as it does from this vantage point—and a lot of my memories of that front yard are from about my mom’s age here. The garage still smells a little like motor oil in the best way—it always has.

And also? My aunt looks exactly like my cousin when we were kids, my uncle could pass for my cousin’s son, and this is one of a handful of pictures of my mom where I really see our resemblance—she looks like how I looked as a kid here. But it’s not just their faces—it’s their energies too. I would have posed as diligently as my mom, my uncle is smiling exactly the way my cousin Rachel’s little boy does, and my cousin Kyle would have been absolutely delighted to get her picture taken after zipping down the window in the back seat.

It feels so filled with the past and the present and the future all at once, and it makes me curious which photos we are taking now that will have that same kind of magic to them 💜 by @devanmaureen

11/10 recommend doing a bucket-list show where you get to:
1) Discover your friends are even more talented than you already knew them to be (WHAT)
2) Fall in love with a whole bunch of new-to-you faces, voices, brains, and hearts
3) Collaborate with a full chorale and symphony in an acoustically perfect venue
4) Experience Cindy Collins ad-libbing solely in Italian while she pretend-knits a crocheted hat
5) Blow bubbles and have slow-mo, invisible snowball fights when time, breaks, and attention permit

MAJOR thanks to @judy7242, @murrelldarrin, @csystmrocks, and the incredible @michael.blatt for the chance at this, and to @kevinininndy and @okay_richy for being superhuman. And @blairst.clair for hooking a girl up with some good good hair.
