Please allow me to reintroducing myself. I’m Devi Vallabhaneni, an LA-based artist who invented a new bas relief embroidery form of art.

I sculpt history, math, and culture into visual patterns that create order and structure, antecedents for beauty. My patterns date back to The Shilpa Shastra, an ancient Indian text that’s considered the ‘Science of Art’.
.
I begin with a set of constants (color and size) and variables (shape, line, and volume) to calculate precise visual equations in Microsoft Excel. With the grid, I’m feel free from distractions so that color, shape, volume, and texture to exist without expectation. This to me is the purest form of beauty.

My practice decontextualizes embroidery based on traditional views of women (craft, labor, decoration, and ornamentalization) and recontextualizes it within the picture plane using rectilinear forms and lines to be experienced in wider cultural forums, conversations, and contexts. taken in Los Angeles, California by @devi.atelier

Marisol Escobar (1930-2016) is an artist I admire. Part of the pop art movement, she became Andy Warhol’s muse. I wish she gained the same type of recognition for her work as Warhol did. She focused on people, families, and isolation. She’s an #artisiadmire. by @devi.atelier

I’m touched every time someone asks for a custom commission of my work. To be in someone’s home is a gift, something I take seriously. When my dear friend Kerry of 30 years asked me to design a piece for her forever home, I of course said yes.
.
The first step in a custom commission is to make sketches so that the client can choose the colors and textures. Then we figure out arrangement, composition, and layout. Kerry worked in fashion, so we thought we’d start with ‘toiles,’ where the first samples are done in white muslin. My version of toiles is black and white. So here is Kerry unboxing her first set of sketches. I want to bottle up her genuine excitement!!!

#flashbackfriday From my first collection in 2016, inspired by Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square. This was 1 of 12 individual pieces of a comprehensive collection that won First Place in @handandlockprize Annual Prize for Embroidery. It’s now in a private collection.
