PRIDE MATTERS and not just for gay people.

Before you complain about another rainbow jersey saying “keep that stuff out of sports,” let me tell you a story. When I was 17 years old, a junior in high school, I got into my first relationship. First time dating. First time holding hands. First time getting those crazy butterflies in my stomach that we all know about. First time texting someone back but not too fast since you don’t want to look too “down bad” that probably only Gen Z knows about. First time staying up late for hours on the phone. First time kissing someone. First time being in love. I was in a relationship with a girl. Her parents did not know about our relationship and it was beautiful. When they found out, things did not stay so beautiful. She could not see me outside of school. She was not allowed to hangout with our friends. We did not get to go to senior prom together. We did not get to celebrate graduating high school and take senior photos. When we were together, my anxiety was always high. I was worried about who was watching us. Should we act like we are girlfriends? Should we stay girlfriends? The little things that teenagers should not have to worry about was a constant fear. It took a toll on my mental health. It was hard for me to love myself at that time because who I am had caused so much pain and sorrow. When I got to college, I was worried if I would make friends and be comfortable showing who I am. Luckily, I was accepted since the day I stepped on UCSB’s campus, but not everyone is so lucky. The question remains why does Pride matter? Why does Pride matter in sports? Pride matters because kids should not grow up feeling like they don’t belong on a field because of who they are. Sports are for everyone and Pride is for everyone. Spread love not hate.

Love,

back for year 3!

A year ago I tore my acl which caused the one of the hardest but rewarding years of my life. In honor of being available to play for the first time since my injury tomorrow I wanted to thank all of the people who made it possible for me to return to the field. Thank you to my parents, siblings, friends, trainers, coaches, and especially to the most amazing teammates for making me feel seen and supported through all the highs and lows! Love you all💙 by @devingreer20
