Oh to be a wolf lying in the sun after a long day. I revisit this set of photos often and keep finding new gems to share. A day I’ll never forget 🙏🏻 by @devingroody

Leica came to me at five weeks old.

A hurricane took out her home. Fences down, kennels gone, everything. She never got the start she deserved, and that’s followed her ever since.

Low-to-mid content wolf dog. Tough as nails, beautiful, and one of the most anxious animals I’ve ever been around. Living with her has taught me more than I expected.

Three things:

1. They read you like a book. Anxious dogs are constantly scanning you for information. If you or someone in her orbit is frustrated, reactive, or tense… they already know and are on edge. Being calm and moving her into calm scenarios is fundamental.

2. You are the routine. We just did 4500 miles together. New campsites every few days, different terrain, different smells, strangers everywhere. And she was fine. Not because anything was predictable… but because I was there and I was consistent. For an anxious dog the stability they’re looking for isn’t necessarily a place, it’s you.

3. You can’t force progress. My other dog Jack has spent his whole life going everywhere with me without a second thought. She doesn’t have that. Pushing an anxious dog into situations they’re not ready for doesn’t build confidence… it sets them back. I had to stop comparing them and just meet her where she is.

She may never be the dog that greets people at the door. She might hide under the bed when new people arrive, but that’s fine. Every small thing she works through is appreciated because of how hard she’s had to work for it. 🐺 by @devingroody

Stopped at Leslie Gulch on the drive back to Washington thinking it’d be a quick little detour.

…I buried the truck to the frame.

Floorboards in the mud. Camper sunk. Absolute disaster.

Then the camper furnace quit because of a stupid $7 sail switch, it dropped below freezing, and I realized I didn’t even pack a real sleeping bag because I figured I’d just run the heat all night.

Somehow I managed to get:
• my truck stuck
• two other pickups stuck
• and an entire F-650 wrecker stuck trying to recover us.

Call me an idiot in the most creative way possible if you want part 2. by @devingroody

Vulpes vulpes

Research has shown red foxes will often scavenge wolf kills after wolves leave the area, using them as an important winter food source while carefully avoiding direct encounters with the pack.

Not long after the wolves disappeared into the timber, this fox slipped out from the forest like he’d been waiting for his moment the entire time.

Earlier in the day, rangers had pulled a bison carcass away from the roadside after wolves repeatedly crossed the road to feed on it. Once the coast was clear, this little fox made two cautious loops through the area, nose low to the ground, checking for scraps the wolves left behind.

One of my favorite parts of Yellowstone is realizing every single animal is connected to another somehow. Even after the wolves vanish, the landscape still moves around them. by @devingroody

Rangers hauled this bison carcass away after wolves kept crossing the road to feed on it.

Yellowstone sometimes relocates carcasses to remote “dump sites” away from traffic to protect both wildlife and people. Wolves, bears, coyotes, ravens and foxes will all pile into a food source like this, and when it’s next to a busy road, things can get dangerous fast.

The goal isn’t to remove the food from the ecosystem. It’s to move the chaos away from traffic.

It’s a reminder of how much of Yellowstone is still carefully managed even when it looks completely wild. by @devingroody

The ghost of the forest.

I found this Great Gray Owl perched on a barren tree on my way back to camp after a full day of photographing wolves in Yellowstone. I was exhausted, ready to call it a night, but I spotted him from the road and pulled over to spend twenty minutes watching him.

He never moved, just slowly rotated his head nearly 270 degrees, listening for voles moving beneath the snow with hearing so precise they can hunt prey they can’t even see.

For decades, people believed wolf packs were ruled by an “alpha male” that fought his way to the top. That idea came from studies of unrelated wolves forced together in captivity during the 1940s, where stress and confinement created unnatural aggression. In 1970, wolf biologist L. David Mech helped popularize the term in his famous book The Wolf, but after decades studying wild wolves in places like Yellowstone National Park and the Arctic, he publicly corrected himself. Wild wolf packs are usually just families: a mother, a father, and their offspring. Young wolves don’t fight to overthrow the parents. They grow up, leave the pack naturally, and try to start families of their own.

When everyone else was jockeying for position to see this beautiful wolf over the trees, I climbed on my trucks roof and just barely caught a glimpse of 1267F from the Wapiti pack. Yellowstone is a wild place. by @devingroody

Another member of the Wapiti Lake pack stepped out of the timber and stood there in the sunlight watching the line of photographers along the road.

What’s always fascinated me about wolves is how much their social structure mirrors family dynamics in people. Packs aren’t just random groups. They’re usually parents, siblings, and younger wolves all working together, with older offspring often staying behind to help raise the next litter.

Hard to explain how surreal it feels when an animal you’ve spent years reading about suddenly steps out of the forest and looks right back at you.
