I’m still unpacking (literally + figuratively) after a week in Portugal with a group of amazing women. Weeks like these feel like a gorgeous peek into the human psyche. Particularly when it’s with women, who I find to be way more generous with their expressions of themselves. We get to ask real questions, and challenge each other with statements like, “we need to be more open with each other about money.” We absorb knowledge as each person shares their expertise and learnings from decades of experience.

We talk about fears, and wounds, and wins. We reflect on what we’d tell our 17yo selves - not just to see how far we’ve come, but bc she still needs to hear it. Somewhere deep inside, that young girl probably needs to hear that it’s okay to feel misunderstood - the world doesn’t need to understand you to love you (not speaking from experience ofc 🤪).

Outside of the sense of community that keeps me on a high after weeks like this, there is a realization I can’t stop thinking about. That no matter how old we are, we never outgrow or out-skill or out-practice the need to be brave. We can be experts in our field, and masters of our craft, and still decide to do something new that stretches us. That takes us back to those feelings of, “can I do this?” “Why me?” “What if I fail?” And we look in the mirror and maybe see that 17-year-old girl looking back, and we find our brave, and say “you can do this…why not you…if you fail you will survive…and also - the most important part - you don’t have to do it alone.”

One of the most beautiful things about all of us parents trying to break cycles and show up in new ways for our kids, is that we get to do that for each other, too. I get to have a woman say to me and my 17yo self, “I might not understand, but I believe you.” And for a generation that is breaking out of the narrative we learned - that women are competition because there are limited seats for the girlies at the table - it is incredibly healing to spend time with women who are building new tables and saying “there’s room for us all.”

They’re being brave, and generous, and stretching, and doing it scared. What a gift to witness. taken in Comporta, Setubal, Portugal by @devinmikala

It’s hard to choose just 20 pictures to capture everything this trip meant to me. Taking my kids to Disney has been a dream of mine since I was a kid myself. The most magical place on earth, with the most magical ppl on earth, what could be better?

What could be better was everything that unexpectedly became part of the story. The opportunity to demonstrate resilience and a positive attitude when our flight was canceled on the way to the airport. No flights out of anywhere in TX could get us anywhere close to Orlando before the next night, so we just kept driving. No pillows or blankets or roadtrip essentials, no oil change for the truck, just a commitment to get our kids to Disney before our first park day in the morning.

Almost 18 hours straight through, and a 4am arrival, but those kids took it like champs and were so amazing. We then had 3 magical days at Disney where I got to experience a ride so amazing it brought me to tears. I got to see my boys face fears, have fun, have late night hot tub sessions for our aching feet, and see a fireworks show that left Theo declaring it was the “best day of his life.” Only followed, he says, by the next day - which was a pizza picnic dinner on the beach in Destin, at sunset. Something only afforded to us by that pesky flight cancellation.

The next day we all got a couple hours of ocean therapy before hitting the road again for 14 more hours of driving. When we pulled in a midnight, as I woke up Wesley, he said “I had a fun trip mama,” and fell asleep in bed literally smiling.

This was a heart-changing trip for me. And the most lasting feeling of it all, was that we truly have the best kids. I am the luckiest ✨ taken in Walt Disney World Resort by @devinmikala

Turkey noodles, my favorite holiday food. These noodles have been made by the women in my family since before I was born. Making them with my dudes is passing on a meaningful tradition from matriarchs, some they never got the chance to meet. Thankful for so many things this year, my little fam tops the list ❤️ by @devinmikala
