I Wish Good Things For You

I hope your hat always keeps the sun off your face.
And your shirt tail is never too short.
I hope you get a nap when you need it,
and your coffee is strong,
and you do work worth waking up early for.

I wish you strength when you’re pulling
more than your weight,
and the wisdom to know
when to rest, when to wait.

May your horse always load,
may his back never ache,
may your pad sweat him even,
may your cinch never break.

I pray joy catches you suddenly
like when the wind takes the gate,
and you find contentment
in each one of life’s states.

May your dog always stay by you
and come when you call,
may your truck always start,
may your horse never fall.
I hope the rain comes a’pourin’
when your pastures are dry,
I hope love takes your hand
when you think it’s passed you on by.

I hope you hear God
in the whispers of wind
that moan through the barnwood
and rattle the tin.

I hope there’s a shade tree
when you’re needing a break,
and after a long day,
there’s a Mexican restaurant that stays open late.

I hope you see country
that goes on for miles.
Climb mountains, swim rivers,
chase sunsets, be wild.

I hope your hands get dirty
and your heart stays true,
no matter what trail you’re riding friend,
I wish good things for you.

“Sorrel Horse” is a poem from Volume I of my poetry books, Words of the West!
I’ve always been drawn to a red horse, or a bay.
My dad always said that a good horse comes in every color, and I’ve never cared much about the wrapper they’re in.
But, I do love a good sorrel or bay.

I have a few copies left of Volume I and II of my book on my website!

It always feels like they’re really turning the crank… meanwhile half the time they’re just crow hopping around 🤣

I spent 14 years with my Josey dog and somehow it’s already been a year since she passed on.

Her photo still sits on the coffee table so she can be with me while I start my day. A tuft of her fur is still tucked into my keychain, so she never misses a ride. She loved to be in the pickup.

When I lost her, I forgot how to breathe, it hurt so badly.

In the year since she left, life has changed significantly.
We started a family.
Brought home another dog.
Began working on building our own homestead.

I fell even deeper in love with the man I thought I couldn’t love any more. We rode, and roped, and laughed, and the days turned to months.

And every day I thought of her. She would have loved this baby. Walter keeps finding her old toys under the couch, behind the bed, and he brings them to me. Thunder again? Josey would be hiding in the bathroom.

She got sick a week before our wedding. She passed just a couple months after I moved in with my husband.

I’m fully convinced that she saw me through the lonely years, the hard years, the just-me-and-her years. And as her face grayed where I kissed the color away, life started to come together.

We met MD, built a life together, started our future, and I think she knew that I was okay. That she’d done her job.

I wanted her to stay and see what we built. But I thanked her every day for the 14 years she gave me as my very best friend. I told her it was okay, she could go when she was ready where her eyes worked again, and her hips didn’t hurt.

And then she slipped away on a beautiful October day. And a little piece of my heart went with her.

Now there’s a little girl in my arms who will never know the dog who helped raise her mother.
She’ll never see Josey riding shotgun in my pickup, or watch her hide from thunderstorms, or know the way she looked at me when I came home.

But someday I’ll tell her.

I’ll tell her about the little ranch dog who stayed beside me while I figured out my life, and how she held on just long enough to see me find my way.

Thank God for the dogs we get in our twenties. I just wish they could stay to meet the people we become. by @devinoutwest

Two week post-op update, Wilson gets a spa day, and we are cleared for takeoff! Not really, but things are going really well.
