V1 SALON is pleased to present

Communication is Key: Drawing as a Silent Language
A solo exhibition by Devin Troy Strother
V1 SALON | September 23 - October 10

Opening reception: Wednesday, September 23 from 16.00—19.00

For this exhibition, Devin Troy Strother presents a new series of drawings that considers these different forms of communication and the space between seeing, speaking, and understanding.
The works approach drawing as a silent language, a way of communicating thoughts, stories, jokes, memories, observations, and cultural information without depending on words. The drawings do not speak in a literal sense, but they are far from quiet. They gossip. They exist. They exaggerate. They remember. They talk shit. They inspire. They misunderstand. They tell stories.
____

Devin Troy Strother (b. 1986) lives and works in California, USA. His practice—which spans painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed-media work, and installation—is united by humour and a engement in contemporary politics. Whilst the work maintains a vibrant and playful aesthetic, its content muses on the multifarious, both overt and concealed, injuries to human dignity in our society and often adresses black stereotypes and well as familiar racist motifs and memorabilia. In this way the works reveal profound reflections on identity made all the more powerful in his lightness of touch. by @devintroy

Josephine Constance Coleman was born on May 10, 1947, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Connie, as she was known to many, was one of nine children three boys and six girls born to Abner and Josephine Coleman.

As a child, Connie was a thinker. She was the quiet one, always deep in thought. Connie loved to tinker with things, often taking them apart and trying to put them back together.

Connie stood out as a strong and fiercely independent soul. Her strength and independence were put to the test when, just after graduating from high school, her mother Josephine moved the entire family to Compton, California. This significant move marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Coleman family. It was during the transformative 1960s that Connie’s passion for justice and equality flourished. She became an active member of the civil rights movement and proudly joined the Black Panthers, fighting for the rights and dignity of her community.

In February 1970, Connie welcomed her firstborn son, Courtland Darrel Edwards, affectionately known as “Corky.” As a single mother, she faced the challenges of raising a child while pursuing her education.
As a single mom, Connie always put Corky’s needs first.

In 1983, while out dancing with her sisters, Connie met and fell in love with Alan Strothers. Their love story blossomed, and in February 1986, they welcomed their son, Devin Troy Strothers.
Alan and ConnieShe was not just a mother and wife; she was a force of nature, a champion of justice, and the heart of her family. Connie’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. by @devintroy
