Summer 🌼First day of school holidays and the dahlias are in full swing. Both lots of guests are from Devon this weekend. They've travelled for less than an hour to come to Devon Dens. I 💚 this! Forget the airport. Even forget the M5. Pootle up / down the road and have a beautiful cabin, surrounded by nature, complete with hot tub (or tepid tub as they've been renamed - no one needs to sit in 38° water in this weather 🥵), local intel on swimming spots, lunch booked at the nearby pub, delicious local produce on order and a date with @budeseapool One lovely lot had already completed a jigsaw by the time I left! As I drove away, I was filled with the familiar Friday feeling. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to have lovely guests who clearly see the effort that's gone into making the Dens what it is, who you know are going to have a great weekend, who appreciate that as an off-grid site there are a few extra bits to explain and who are going to respect and enjoy the space. It's a mix of relief, joy and deep pride. We've always taken extremely seriously the business of people giving us their hard earned cash for a holiday and we're always so incredibly grateful that they've chosen Devon Dens for a break. With 100% 5 ⭐ reviews across the board, it's clear that this hard work is seen. So yes, it's nice to enjoy that Friday feeling on a sunny, summer's evening at the start of the busy season 🥰We have two nights next week and a couple of gaps in the Cabin (sleeping up to 4) over the school holidays. To the water or the woods.... This week has been a case of if you're not in one you're in the other (or if you're lucky you're in both at the same time 🤩) As the third heatwave of the year kicks in, we're very grateful to live near refreshing, clean rivers and glorious woodland offering deep shade. Going off piste with today's post - the algaerythyms won't like this formula! But has anything about this week been normal? There's been an awful lot of water-based content from us recently but really, right now, that's what we all either need or want. Water. Pure, refreshing, Dartmoor water. Cooler evenings. Bearable, very early mornings. It's been insane. Guests that have been in all week used the hot tub as a cold plunge pool. We hope wherever you are, you've coped and there have been full immersion opportunities. Temperatures are dropping for us today. Still some nice sunshine around ☀️(BTW - we have two days left in the Den between now and September *15th - 17th July* and a couple of gaps here and there in the Cabin. This week has been a case of dodging showers, passing through portals and finding joy in the moments of bright and brilliant sunshine. As in life.... We've had lovely guests 🥰 One of them said they'd been worried about the lack of WiFi but it turned out to be the most he's spoken and listened to his daughters in years 🧡 To give families / friends / couples the opportunity to tune into their loved ones, away from this vice like grip these terrible megacorps have on our brains and our souls, is an absolute privilege. I am fully aware that posting this here, on one of said megacorp platforms, is a tad ironic. West Devon is enveloped in GREEN currently. We have gaps here and there before school holidays with our midweek specials still running, (see website for details) and the very last few spaces available for July and August. Did you notice? There was a glaring omission in our last post '10 very good reasons to stay at Devon Dens'.... The Cabin and the Den 🤩 We thought they needed their own, dedicated post. Made by us with our other hat on @thecabincompanydevon using sustainable timber sourced in the south west, these beautiful spaces sleep up to 4 and 6. Comfortable, solid, warm in winter and cool in summer, this pair of glorious cabins are brimful of character. Each with a veranda for that morning cuppa or evening tipple, and with a fully functioning shower room and excellent indoor dry loo. There's an Aga wood burner AND central heating 🔥 and fully equipped kitchen.On more than one occasion, guests have arrived and had a little weep with joy at the utter delightfulness of their accommodation ♥️ Between them they've welcomed literally thousands of guests but they still look and feel totally fresh. If you appreciate great design, excellent craftsmanship and the aesthetic of timber structures, come and stay. Wow. That was some weather. It's cooling down a bit now but apparently the thermometers topped out at 34° this week 🥵 🥵🥵How do you feel about those temperatures at this point in the year? Over the moon? Terrified? Both?? Winters feel long in the UK and this last one felt particularly dark and stormy (and not in a good rum and ginger way). It's so lovely to be able to enjoy the first proper warmth of the year. Sitting outside in that strappy top (see a post from a few months ago when I promised this would be coming 😃), enjoying evening feasts in the garden, sleeping with the windows wide open... But 34° in May is not normal. Pity the poor creatures, the seas, the trees. The crops we must grow to feed ourselves, especially this year with so much global conflict disrupting transportation. Where do you stand? Fed up of sucking on your paper straw as you watch a handful of rich men destroy the planet for their own greed? Beyond caring? Feeling helpless? Think it's all a load of tosh whipped up by a bunch of cranks? Wishing I'd bugger off whilst you finish your ice cream before slathering on the Amber Solaire? We always have been, and still are, an eco site. We've always tried to offer a lower impact alternative to regular holidays. We can't help but care and be concerned. This post isn't supposed to be fear mongering.
