LESSONS I’M LEARNING AS I DATE AFTER 50…

At 56, I’m learning that wanting love and being ready for partnership are not always the same thing.

This week’s conversations about living together, separate homes, retirement and independence made me turn the question back on myself.

I’ve spent the last few years building a life that feels peaceful.

My schedule.
My routines.
My space.
My decisions.

I enjoy that freedom.

But it has caused me to ask myself an uncomfortable question:

Do I genuinely want a partner—or do I want someone who fits into the life I’ve already built without requiring anything to change?

Those aren’t the same.

After 50, independence can become so comfortable that partnership begins to feel like an interruption—even when we say we want it.

A committed relationship means more than adding someone to the empty spaces in my schedule.

It means considering another person’s time, feelings, needs and plans.

It means compromise—not losing myself or giving up my peace, but intentionally making room for someone else.

I want love, loyalty, companionship and intentional time.

But am I willing to share some of the control that comes with doing life alone?

I’m honestly still figuring that out.

Maybe the question isn’t only:

“Can I find the right person?”

Maybe it’s also:

“Have I created room for the right woman when she arrives?”

🔵 I’m ready to adjust for true partnership
🟡 I want love, but I prefer separate lives
⚫️ I’m still figuring out how much room I can make

Be honest: Do you truly want a partner—or do you want companionship that never requires you to change?

Let’s learn how to date after 50 together.

Coffee, no suga. ☕️

Man, this is why I coached Basketball see this kid right here. This kid was out work horse. He did all the little things all of the dirty things. He locked down opposing teams best guard. I saw him at the gym yesterday. He gave me the biggest hug. He told me COACH whenever I’m playing ball. I can hear you. Most importantly, he said COACH I got my masters. I’m a sixth grade teacher man. I hugged him I told him I’m proud of him told him I loved him. Jared, the Brooklyn Kings family the village is proud of you. Great job to his family. Stop trying to rescue women from the consequences of how they were raised.

You are not her therapist.
You are not her rehabilitation program.
And marriage is not a character-development project.

If she consistently brings chaos, disrespect, entitlement, or dysfunction into your life, don't convince yourself that you can love it out of her.

Walk away before you learn the lesson the hard way.
