Alongside the Dumchipara youth, we organised a Jatra, a celebratory procession on Adivasi Diwas - 9th August. Children, young people, women and elders walked together, carrying songs, stories and memories with them. The Jatra was not simply a performance. It was a coming together. A moment to remember where our communities come from, to listen to the stories of our ancestors, to celebrate the knowledge that has survived generations of displacement and marginalisation, and to root ourselves again in our own ways of knowing and relating with the world. For a few hours, the roads of Dumchipara became a space of songs, dance, memory, learning and collective joy. And perhaps that is what made it such a celebration. We were not just remembering our histories. We were learning how to carry them forward, together. vc @_david.sen_ #indigenousday #adivasi diwas #jal #jungle #jameen by @devraj_kzur
When we heard about Johar Jatra 2.0, we knew we wanted to learn with the community, not simply attend an event. Johar Jatra is organised by the North Bengal Tribal Youth Association. @nbtya.official Marsal learners from Umul set up a stall and organised a community library at the jatra. Marsal, meaning light in Santali, is our youth engagement programme. It emerged as a response to the structural injustices that continue to shape Adivasi lives and futures. Rooted in the wisdom of the Dhumkuria, Marsal is a co-learning space where young people engage with education rooted in values of Adivasi, feminist, anti-caste and workers’ movements. Together we strengthen our collective journeys of resistance and self-determination. pictures taken by @_david.sen_ by @devraj_kzur
We had a fun conversation with Minati Kujur, an elder from the Kurukh community. Curiously, we asked her - ‘दादी ई के का ले बनात हिस?’ (Dadi, why are you taking so much efforts to make this) She smiled, and said, ‘ई से अंगना का झाड़ू करेगा, बनाएगा अंगना वाला झाड़ू’ Then she showed us how she makes the broom ‘ई गो नारियल कर सुखअल् पाताई हेके, मोई ई के निकात हो झाड़ू बनाईक ले। कितना बेर बाजार से किन्बे, एहे लेल तो मिलत हे।’ (These are dried coconut leaves. I am making broomstick out of it. How many times will you go to the market, when you get what you need right here in the village!) Karam Puja 2025 at Hantapara 🌿✨ Karam reminds us that we are nature, not rulers of it. It is a call to live in harmony — with each other, with our forests, rivers, trees, and all beings of nature. This year, we celebrated Karam Puja together with the Hantapara Late Sushil Kujur Memorial Dhumkuriya Sangh and our community members. It was a day of joy, solidarity, and togetherness as we welcomed Karam Raja in the heart of Hantapara. On the Karam Maidan, we set up an open library — filled with picture books, storybooks, and writings from within Adivasi communities. Children and youth explored with curiosity, finding joy and pride in their stories. Our youth also led presentations on land struggles — sharing how companies, backed by the State, continue to alienate Adivasis from their jal, jungle, jameen. Through chart paper presentations, they shared the struggles of Adivasi communities in Bastar, Aarey, and Hasdeo — and our people in Hantapara reflected that these stories mirror our own in the Dooars, where tea companies and state powers continue to design ways to take away our land. Moments like these remind us that culture and learning walk together. In celebrating our roots, we also nurture imagination, strengthen resistance, and sow seeds for our collective future. 🌿📚 Happy Karam to all - may we continue to celebrate, learn, and stand together. Jai Johar, Sathiyon! 9th August – Biswa Adivasi Diwas was not just a celebration. It was an act of resistance, reclamation, and dignity. For weeks in our Omon (community library in Hantapara, Dumchipara, and Garganda) our children and communities prepared posters, practised songs, raised slogans, and danced. And when the day came, we stood together as Adivasi peoples — affirming our history, identity, and future. Most powerful was witnessing: 🌱 Children take ownership. 🌱 Dumchipara community leading with pride. 🌱 Ancestors’ rhythms alive in songs, dances, and stories. Umul in Mundari & Santhali means shade under a tree, a place of care and strength. As a collective, we believe that we are each other’s strength. Together we celebrate. Together we resist.
