Certifications can help you learn the concepts.

But eventually, you have to build.

Can you configure the pipeline?
Can you secure the Kubernetes cluster?
Can you work through IAM problems?
Can you troubleshoot when something breaks?

That’s the difference between knowing the material and being able to talk about what you’ve actually done.

The DevSec Blueprint is built around hands-on Cloud Security and DevSecOps experience.

Comment BUILD below and we’ll send you the link to create your free account.

Watching tutorials ≠ hands-on experience.

The real learning starts when you build it yourself and something breaks. 😂

That’s why our Builder Sessions are hands-on. You’re in your own environment building, troubleshooting, and figuring out what actually works.

Another DSB win. 🙌🏾

One of our members just landed a Senior Cloud Security Engineer role at FICO.

That now puts Infosys, Citi, Invesco, IBM, and FICO on the growing list of companies where DSB members have landed roles or internships.

Seeing members take what they’ve learned, apply it, and turn that experience into real opportunities is exactly why we built The DevSec Blueprint.

We’re still early, but the list keeps growing. 🚀

One of the biggest differences between Okta and Authentik comes down to cost.

With Okta, you are typically paying per user, which can add up as your environment grows.

With Authentik, you can self-host it, install it in your own environment, and start building without paying a per-user fee.

That does not mean Okta is a bad product. In fact, for what it offers, the pricing can still be pretty reasonable.

But if you are building a home lab, learning IAM, or just want more control over your identity stack, Authentik gives you a very different path.

Cloudflare gives you the tunnel token. But getting that into Kubernetes cleanly is where things get more interesting.

In this lab, I’m taking that Cloudflare Tunnel token and wiring it into a Kubernetes deployment.

The catch?

Cloudflared is easy to run as a container, but there is not always a Helm chart sitting there ready for exactly how you want to deploy it.

So I built my own.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been creating Helm charts for some of the tools I use in my home lab when the deployment path is not already laid out the way I want.

For Cloudflared, that means defining the configuration in `values.yaml`, passing in the right tunnel information, and making the deployment repeatable instead of doing it manually every time.

This is the kind of stuff I love about home labs. You stop just following documentation and start building your own platform patterns.

Cloudflare Tunnel is ridiculously easy to get started with.

And no, Cloudflare is not sponsoring this. 😂

From my own experience, I was genuinely surprised by how quickly I could take services running in my home lab and make them securely accessible through Cloudflare.

Creating a tunnel only takes a few steps. You name it, select the domain, grab the tunnel token and ID, connect the runner, and you are off.

For labs like this, that simplicity matters because it lets you spend less time fighting networking and more time actually building.

We officially got Authentik up, running, and accessible from anywhere. 🔥

That means someone can hit the public endpoint, travel across the internet, reach the local network, and ultimately land on Authentik running inside a VirtualBox environment.

When you really think about that flow, it is kind of wild.

From here, the fun starts. You can begin configuring applications, providers, authentication stages, access policies, and the rest of your identity stack.

This is where a simple home lab starts turning into a real identity platform.

🍂 October is here and we have a great month ahead at DevSec Blueprint!

Our DSB Builders will be spending this month diving into Identity & Access Management (IAM)— learning together, getting hands-on, asking questions and turning concepts into practical experience.

You don’t have to know everything before you show up.

You just have to be willing to learn and build. 🛠️

📅 Check out our October Builders calendar below to see what we have planned.

All of these sessions are exclusive to DSB Builders and we’d love to have you join us.

If you’re looking for a community where you can continue developing your skills in cloud, security, DevSecOps and engineering alongside others doing the same, come build with us.

👉 devsecblueprint.com

Looking forward to another month of learning, building and growing together. 🙌🏾

Cloudflare Tunnel makes it possible to securely expose services running inside your local environment without opening everything directly to the internet.

You install the Cloudflare connector on your system, authenticate it, and Cloudflare creates a secure outbound connection back to its network. From there, you can map a public hostname to a service running inside your lab.

In this setup, we use Cloudflare Tunnel so Authentik can be reached from a publicly accessible endpoint while the actual service stays inside the local network.

That becomes especially useful when you start integrating Authentik with cloud platforms and other external services that need to communicate back to it.

What if you could use the same identity provider to access your entire home lab and cloud environment?

That is exactly what we are doing with Authentik.

In this setup, Authentik sits at the center of the environment and handles access to tools like AWS IAM Identity Center, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, Vault, Argo CD, Grafana, Kasm Workspaces, and more.

Pair it with CloudFlare Tunnels, and you can securely expose the services you need without managing a bunch of separate local accounts.

For AWS specifically, Authentik can sync users and groups into IAM Identity Center, so access can be managed centrally instead of creating and maintaining individual AWS users.

This is the kind of setup that turns a home lab into something that starts to feel a lot more like a real enterprise environment.

Why do identity providers matter in the first place?

Because managing separate accounts across every application does not scale.

Identity providers help centralize authentication and access, making it possible to use single sign-on and manage permissions across your environment from one place.

That is where tools like Authentik come in.

Authentik is a self-hosted, open-source identity provider that gives you a way to build and manage identity infrastructure without relying entirely on a proprietary platform.

In our latest DSB Builder Session, we break down what identity providers do, why SSO matters, and why Authentik is worth learning.
