I was feeling kind of down the week or so leading up to my birthday on Monday. It wasn't *because* of the birthday, per se, but I wasn't necessarily looking forward to it either. A general melancholy was hanging over my head heading into the weekend and the supposed-to-be-rainy day. Man, did that turn around quickly!

After a really lovely day wandering the city with my family – visiting @fotografiska.newyork (a fun museum, check it out!), and some drinks and friendly competition at @wearespin – we headed to Brooklyn for dinner.

I had a feeling something was up, but couldn’t have anticipated what @sab6888 had up her sleeve – a surprise screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey with a bunch of friends at the @alamonyc.

Thank you to everyone who came out – it was a wonderful evening, something I really needed, and a surprise I’ll never forget. And thank you especially to @sab6888 for planning the whole thing - I love you so much!

I felt very lucky to have the opportunity to travel to Hawaii for work last week. We didn't have a ton of free time to explore outside of the job, but everything we were able to see both on and off the clock was incredible. Here's a photo I took of the Makapu'u Lighthouse, and the unbelievably blue waters surrounding it, from Makapu'u Beach Park on O'ahu. Shot on Olympus OM-10 with Fujifilm Superia 400.

This was Grandpa's favorite spot, and how I'll always remember him. The Cabin, our family's little bit of land outside of Albuquerque in the Manzano Mountains, was a refuge for him. It was quiet and peaceful. He loved having family and friends there. We'd barbeque, tell stories, and laugh. The kids would go for walks to find arrowheads, or up the road to the neighbors to shoot BB guns at coke cans. We loved going down to the Casita to play pool (or toss rocks at the old outhouse, which was long out of use, thankfully).

Those visits are some of my favorite childhood memories, and Grandpa was always the constant. He had a sharp wit, and a fantastic memory. He told stories with great detail and a gentle humor. Years later I would mention to Sabrina that Dolly Parton reminded me of my Grandpa in that way. As he got older the details got a little fuzzier, but it didn't matter, he adapted, put on his "CRS" hat, and made us laugh just the same.

The Cabin is gone now, sold in recent years when Grandpa couldn't travel up there to enjoy it any longer. And yesterday evening we lost the man who made those trips and these memories what they were. The kindest, most generous man I've ever known. I know that if heaven exists he's up there right now, relaxing in that same chair, with Grandma and Uncle Scott by his side, swapping stories with the angels and Saint Peter himself. by @dewambold
