When I set out to make "Prairie Dogs," I had no inkling of the marathon it would become. We started shooting 2 days into the pandemic. On my first day, I had hired 10 crew members. 2 showed up. By the second day, I was down to one crew member, by the third day, I pushed the pause button. We would have several stops and starts on this film, between the pandemics, the strikes, and the complete decimation of my industry, and though I finally managed to get through production, I can't say it didn't come at a cost. Massive rewrites had to be made to accommodate a smaller footprint. The film took a far more intimate turn than the cross country misadventure I set out to make, but the story becomes what it wants to become. They claim their life like a rebellious teenager. Feels good to be wrapping the edit on this film, to finally see one of my babies go out into the world. Soon. by @dex.decker

"Jolie Blonde" was such a wonderful experience. I had the most amazing cast, and there's a reason Alejandra Awobokun and Merah Benoit won an acting award at Venice Shorts.

Usually, I do not allow talent to look at footage. It slows down production and makes the talent self-conscious. An actor must make the decision to trust the director and relinquish control. It is a requirement if anything magical is going to happen. Without that trust, everything unravels. Trust is something the actor must do before accepting the role, though I imagine few understand how imperative it is to the entire process.

Sometimes, I will let my actor see the frame so they know the space within which they can move, but playback, for me, is a no-no. However, I made an exception for Sweet Pea since she had never seen herself on camera before, and her curiosity was so damn cute. Who could resist? by @dex.decker

Google says this is a dolphin tooth, but I found it on my hike in Denton, Tx. Too large to be a domestic cat. Anyone have a thought on what animal lost its tooth? It is so white, no plaque. Some little critter with a toothbrush? by @dex.decker

These little guys get a bad rap, but they are beneficial predators. They used to scare the bejeezus out of me, but now I've been stung so many times, I just scoop them up and take them outside. They are the strangest of all animals, don't you think? Roadrunners love to eat them, and we have a few of those around. Everything has its place and purpose. by @dex.decker

Loki might be my favorite raptor at the center (don't tell the others.) I had no idea how intelligent vultures are, and Loki is so silly and spastic and playful. I just adore him. Also, if you have not heard the sonic whirl of vultures in flight, it is one of the coolest sounds. One day, I spent two hours just recording their sound (for no real reason other than my own pleasure. I'll use it somewhere.) by @dex.decker

I love that I live in a neighborhood where I can still find places to enjoy solitude. Didn't see a soul on my hike today except the fisherman on his boat. It's changing; all the development is coming this way, and soon I will have to find a new home where I can find these kinds of moments, but for now, I am grateful that I can still have the lake to myself, even on a weekend. by @dex.decker

For me, sound comes long before anything else. Perhaps it is my music background. Sometimes it comes before the words. I hear the film long before I write it, and then I obsessively listen to songs on repeat as I am writing. Sometimes I listen to sound effects as I write. I contend sound is more important than picture, and yet so many indie filmmakers address it last. Every story has its own distinct musicality. It will serve you well to listen. by @dex.decker
