POSTS STORIES REELS

‘curtain’ by [g] is the first offering from Deep Exposure (dexp), out now exclusively on vinyl. Deep Exposure began in 2023 as a residency with The Lot Radio, hosted and programmed by g. Informed by the work of Pauline Oliveros and g’s experiences in nightlife, Deep Exposure is concerned with how music lives in peoples’ lives and is intended to serve as a guidepost towards a practice that integrates music further into the lives of listeners. g’s regular shift behind the counter at Ergot encouraged her to be more curious about the regular listening habits of Ergot’s regular patrons and how Adrian Rew, the shop’s owner, facilitated them. These customer interactions encouraged g to dig further into the process of creating, distributing, and curating records within the store. With some encouragement from shop favorites like Deon Jamar, g decided to push the project forward. ‘curtain’ is not just a love letter to the vinyl record, but to all those who enjoy the medium and those who facilitate the exploration of sound that the culture around this medium encourages. The sounds on ‘curtain’ can be distilled into a simple phrase found in the runout grooves of this 4 track EP: “boring music, for curious people.”

So, are you curious? On Saturday, October 31st, we will celebrate the release of ‘curtain’ by [g] at Ergot Records from 4 - 8 pm. Copies will be for sale and some light refreshments will be provided. by @dexp.fm

I'm thinking of you by Russell E.L. Butler

On June 27th 2021, in collaboration with my dear friend Miah Benton (adab), we presented Boyz II Them for the first time. That day would be our first time DJing together and our first in-person performance coming out of the COVID lockdown in New York. On our way to the venue I had, what I would later find out was, a panic attack. My chest tightened, my thoughts raced, my muscles tensed. Playing music, setting my mind to concentrating on one task, playing 3 records, letting Miah play 3 records, until we hit 2, and then 1, was the only thing that assuaged this anxiety.

The energy that day was incredible, it was so hot that Miah’s first 2 records melted as they spun on the turntables. But the energy was also quite dark. That day we had 5 different interactions with strangers. These party-goers tried to tell us what to do, what to play, and how to play it. Though each patron was safely escorted to the exit, the damage was done. At one point, I pulled the music out completely and yelled at a person that asked for techno. The only words that echo in my brain are “Don’t you know what we all just went through? I thought we’d never be able to do this again!” This statement united the crowd and we played uninterrupted for another few hours. My knee still aches from that day. My conscience still quivers when I think about those requests. The year that followed was defined by an absolute stranger approaching me while I was DJing and attempting to tell me what to do. This occurred at every single gig, for a year. I’ve told this tale many times. I am no longer shaken by the entitled disrespect that I have been met with. As a means of processing these experiences, I began to ask why? That question allowed the compassion in my heart to grow. I am now armed with an empathy that is fully loaded with curiosity.

My only concern in sharing these experiences is that they are useful to you. If you are a young artist or if you are young in your creative pursuits, I would like to re-present some of my words, so that a lesson in them can arise. Hopefully more questions can arise with the resolution of these lessons. by @dexp.fm

When you hear the word techno, you may hear it followed by the name Jeff Mills (@jeff_mills_official). Known as “The Wizard” of Detroit’s early techno scene in the 1980s, he was a co-founder of the seminal Underground Resistance collective, and held down vaunted residencies at Limelight in New York and Tresor in Berlin. His treasured 12-inches have moved dance floors worldwide ever since. Mills once described his musical mission, to the writer Hari Kunzru, as being “about making people feel they’re in a time ahead of this present time”—and for decades now, he’s made good on that promise.

Last fall, he brought Tomorrow Comes the Harvest to Pioneer Works; now he returns to NYC for the 30th anniversary of his Live at the Liquid Room set at Knockdown Center (@knockdowncenter).

For PW Broadcast, he spoke with Russell E.L. Butler (@russellelbutler) at @thelotradio about forgetting, the blind spots of linear time, and the ineffable “it” only music can reach.
