The pool holds words as the sea holds light

This year I completed BODY, a series of paintings I’ve been working on all year. It’s the most personal work I’ve ever created.

“A writer is someone who plays with his mother’s body,” writes Maggie Nelson. BODY draws inspiration from the same impulse that gave rise to Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous: a letter written to a mother who cannot read the language in which it is written. The series is a visual poem in English, dedicated to my mother. After ten years of personally experiencing cancer, chemotherapy, and the liminal state between life and death—the series stems from the relationship between a mother and her son—and from the slow observation that the body demands.

The process at the heart of the work is disappearance and mimicry as a traumatic condition. The act of painting is, at the same time, an act of erosion.

The swimming pool is a container chosen to hold these words. A metaphor for an industrial sea—a closed body of water.
