I’m not sure how or why I need to write this, but something is telling me that keeping my hands busy and sharing will help, even if some may find it silly. Yesterday, we had to make the most difficult decision and put our sweet baby boy to sleep. His symptoms started so casually one day..heaving to pass his first hairball here and there? The next day his breathing got more labored, and sounded almost wet. We took him to the vet, his appetite and energy was still the same, so they sent us home assuring us a viral URI is common, it passes, give him time and extra support they said. Two days later and I’m hand feeding him warm tuna, warm baby food to stimulate his appetite, buying more and more things to help, to heal him, make recovery more comfortable. The breathing gets even more labored so we go back to our vet, then we rush to the ER, and they hurry him to an oxygen chamber immediately. X-rays showed a mass around his little lungs blocking his windpipe. Due to his young age and the aggressive progress of this mass, the prognosis was grim, mediastinal lymphoma, growing since birth or shortly after. Nothing to be done but CT scans, biopsies, surgery, then chemo, prolonged hospitalization.. and all that IF he’s even able to handle anesthesia with his windpipe almost completely pinched like a garden hose. The doctor looked me in the eyes and said survival and recovery is so slim for such a young baby, and we knew we couldn’t selfishly put him through more pain and suffering just for a slim chance to have him back.
