Abiqua Falls was in the news earlier this year when it bizarrely went up for sale (handyman's special, but great investment opportunity!). The falls have been owned by the Mount Angel Abbey, whose Monks also own and make beer for the Benedictine Brewery, for over a century. The current state of affairs is that the state of Oregon plans to purchase the falls and the surrounding area to preserve it. Which is a good thing, because the main waterfall and the canyon run upstream of it are astonishingly fun. In the spirit of 'leave no trace' we studied up on and successfully managed to ghost the anchors. Great day with @efabrams. Stay tuned for an article on canyoning in @bendmagazine. by @dfosterhill

The Sunshine Route on Hood's north side is brilliantly named. If you time it right, the snow slopes you are front pointing up illuminate with rose colored light when you are half way up the route. The north side offers solitude (95% of climbers use the south side) and gives you a spectacular tour through all of the crevasses of the Eliot, Coe, and Langille. Moderate climbing, high exposure, and perfect weather. Legs are on fire today, but 10/10 would do again. by @dfosterhill

This ride somehow fell out of our rotation the past many years. Which is spectacularly bad decision making by @kendravsharp and me. The west-side switchback descent (20 miles, 4000' drop) is about as close to flying as you can get. And yes...I'm a dinosaur on my beloved Indy Fab custom steel frame. It's all carbon and e-bikes these days! by @dfosterhill

Annual pilgrimage up Hood. Views from the Three Sisters to Rainier never get old. New (to me) route, and great crew of CMRU teammates. Thanks to Tyler for a few of the shots. The 9 degF wind chill definitely dis-incentivized the taking of photos or, frankly, stopping for ANY reason. by @dfosterhill

45 years with one foot in the Northwoods, and sharing it with my parents, siblings, girlfriend (now spouse!), and now kids has been the gift of a lifetime. Here’s to slower days, glassy water, marginal internet, thunderstorm power outages, and sweaty, humid evenings. by @dfosterhill

One of the reasons we moved back west was to be able to raise our children near mountains, oceans, streams, and forests. Since they were babies we have taken advantage of the amazing outdoor opportunities that the USFS, BLM, NPS, and other agencies make available. I mean, fire lookouts are basically forts in the sky for big kids!! My last image shows public lands, colored by agency. The western U.S. is a playground for the exploration, appreciation, and love of our outdoor spaces.

Consider this a photographic ode to public lands in the US, given that they are under a clear and present threat.
🏔️🌲Our stay at the lookout offered all the colors, and all the feels. I will never tire of an inky sky, a warm glow from the campfire, and the softness of a mountain sunset in the Oregon Cascades. What a great way to kick off the summer of 2025. by @dfosterhill
