We want to create a new annual gathering where local filmmakers meet collaborators, students connect with working artists, established voices connect with the next generation, and people who have been building this community for years have a chance to connect with the people who are just discovering it.

Because a great filmmaking community doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when people find each other.

Earlier this week, @riverrunfilm was named one of MovieMaker Magazine’s Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee.

I held off on posting about it because I wanted to take a moment to properly express how grateful I am, not just for the recognition itself, but for the many people who made it possible.

The truth is, I didn’t get RiverRun on this list. I’m simply one small part of a 28-year history shaped by countless staff members, filmmakers, volunteers, sponsors, board members, and supporters who have helped build RiverRun into the festival it is today. To everyone who came before me and helped shepherd this organization through nearly three decades, thank you. I’m honored to carry the torch forward and excited to see where we can take RiverRun over the next 28 years.

At the same time, I would never have had the confidence or knowledge to step into a role like this without the mentorship, friendship, and support of my first film festival family, Slamdance.

People like Taylor Miller, Paul Rachman, Dan Mirvish, and Peter Baxter taught me not only how film festivals work, but why they matter. They showed me the value of championing independent artists, creating opportunities for filmmakers, and building communities around storytelling. Each of them encouraged me, challenged me, and helped me become a better version of myself in this work.

This recognition gave me an excuse to be sentimental for a minute, so here we are.

I genuinely love what I do. I love being part of the independent film community, and I never take for granted the fact that I get to play even a small role in helping filmmakers share their work with audiences.

Thank you as well to the team at MovieMaker Magazine for the work you do year-round to spotlight festivals, filmmakers, and the people working behind the scenes to keep this ecosystem thriving.

Sure, at the end of the day it’s a list in a magazine. But it’s also a reminder that the hard work, long hours, and passion that so many people pour into film festivals around the world every year truly matter.

During my seven years at @slamdancegroup, I was lucky to build a truly meaningful working relationship with @moviemakermag. Their staff cares deeply about independent filmmakers and the community that supports them. The LIMITLESS Director Award for Community Impact is presented to a filmmaker whose work embodies the power of cinema as a force for change, honoring a director whose story not only represents its community, but has the potential to transform it.

Thank you to @dgkoproductions @riverrunfilm and all of the staff who supported our film and helped us pack the house not once but twice and shuttled us to news interviews and press engagements during the festival. The visibility you have created in the Triad for disabled people will not soon be forgotten. We share this award with all of you.

“The RiverRun International Film Festival has announced the Audience and Jury Awards for the 2026 Festival. This year’s Festival ran April 17-25 and offered both in-person and virtual screenings. The Festival this year presented 178 films representing 47 countries.

Thank god @martinmcfly_ captured this amazing Polaroid of @meatbodiesofficialauthentic at @phuzzsounds it sure beats my video where you can just hear my slightly tone deaf self singing along to Mountain. Thanks again to @phuzzsounds for giving me the opportunity to reconnect with @yeahchadyeah it was honestly one of the best nights of my entire year.
