On October 6, 2023 my parents were in the midst of selling my childhood home. We had a few days off from practice and I went home for one last hurrah in Basking Ridge.

I wanted to go to my favorite local restaurants, get a few nights sleep in my undersized twin bed, and soak in the childhood memories from our home of over 20 years.

That Friday night, my parents and I watched a movie liked we’d done hundreds of times over the years. We watched “Golda” about former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and the events surrounding the 1973 Yom Kippur War where Israel suffered a surprise attack that threatened the country greatly.

I went to bed that night and woke up the next morning to check my phone. I was groggy and looking at it the way you do when you want to see the time and how much longer you have to sleep. I saw a bunch of notifications about the Hamas attacks on October 7th. Videos of Israelis being massacred, raped, and fearing for their lives.

I was still half awake so I thought I must have just been having a bad dream about the movie the night prior. Then I went up to use the bathroom. And I came back and realized I was wide awake and witnessing this reality.

It was jarring.

I’m not a particularly religious person. You won’t find me going to synagogue often or reciting morning prayers, but I’ve always been proud to be Jewish. Sometimes it’s through Jewish humor, others through an oversized pastrami sandwich, and then the connection to Israel.

No matter your religion level or background, if you’re Jewish and you step foot in Israel for the first time, it does something to you. It feels foreign and natural all at once. The one place you’re not a minority (ok maybe Boca Raton and Long Island count too), where people from all over the world come and it feels like home.

3 years ago today, Israel suffered the worst massacre in its history. Since then the profound loss, pain, and rabid scourge of anti-semitism have at times felt overwhelming for the Jewish community at large.

But just like after the pogroms and the holocaust, we are still here. Thousands of years later.

Last week, I had lunch with Greg Herenda, the former head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

I got to know Greg during the COVID-19 pandemic when he would volunteer with my charity organization @scoutingandscavenging every week in Newark, NJ packaging food and essential hygiene supplies for residents in the city’s food relief program.

From 2020-2023, S&S helped distribute over 3,000 pounds of unused hotel toiletries across the country with 120+ college, NBA, and G League teams participating.

In 2023, most hotels caught on and instituted the “scavengers roadblock” with wall-mounted toiletries in every room to prevent waste and be more environmentally conscious.

Here is a throwback video to 2020 narrated by Ian Eagle spotlighting our first-year of impact.

Thanks to all the friends, colleagues, and strangers who contributed over the years. by @dgm591

I’ve rooted for Vanderbilt Football for 16 years.

I’ve seen heartbreak, despair, and often complete incompetence.

Today, I saw a miracle.

Wow, what a day. What a finish.

During the 2021-22 season, I had the most unique scouting assignment of my 9-year career with the Bucks: scout the star player for the D3 Yeshiva University Maccabees.

Yeshiva is a school for Orthodox Jews (aka very religious) and their sports teams don’t compete in games from sundown on Friday till sundown on Saturday to observe Shabbat. Historically, the program pretty much sucked.

But from 2019 to 2021, the Maccabees won 50 straight games across 3 seasons, one of the longest winning streaks in NCAA Basketball history. They were led by Ryan Turrell, the leading score in D3 known for his flowing blonde hair and signature yarmulke on his head.

I scouted Turrell twice that year and he was a very good D3 player but not an NBA prospect (he did spend 2 years in the G League), but the assignment was fascinating on so many levels.

As a Jewish person, scouting a game where an entire team is wearing yarmulkes was jarring. The water girls were religious Jewish women with long shirts and skirts covering their bodies. People in the stands were praying during timeouts. Turell’s mom was taunting the refs.

During the 2nd game I scouted, you had Amar’e Stoudemire, Enes Kanter, and Bucks owner Marc Lasry courtside as they won the conference championship.

The whole thing was surreal.

One of the people in the midst of it all was Michael Sweetney. Sweetney was a standout at Georgetown before becoming a lottery pick with the Knicks. His career on the court never panned out as many expected mainly due to conditioning issues, but he resurfaced in NYC basketball lore as an assistant coach for the Maccabees while also using his platform to advocate for mental health.

He played a crucial role in their historic success while also hosting basketball clinics in the US and Israel designed to build bridges between the various communities he identified with.

Sweetney passed away today.

At a time when the world seems more divided than ever, let’s take a moment to celebrate someone who chose to unite people through the game many of us love.

RIP Michael Sweetney. by @dgm591

I was 10 years old on the morning of 9/11.

It was an absolutely beautiful day in Basking Ridge, NJ so when the bell rung for recess at Mt Prospect Elementary, we were all ready to run outside and play football.

The problem was the cafeteria workers wouldn’t let us leave the building so we just stayed inside for an extended lunch. We were all so annoyed because we just couldn’t believe they wouldn’t let us outside when the sun was shining.

When my mom picked me up from school later that day, that was the first thing I remember telling her and then she tried to explain to my sister and I what had happened earlier in the day.

I was too young to really process it all but I recall watching the news and being overwhelmed with sadness so I went out to the neighbor’s swingset with a few other kids. We sat there aimlessly talking and trying to make sense of what happened. One of the kids’ dads worked at the World Trade Center and hadn’t made it home yet. We really didn’t know what to do or say.

In the days and weeks after 9/11 what struck me most was how unified the country was. American flags flying everywhere. Neighborhood food drives, volunteering, benefit concerts. People just genuinely wanted to be around each other and help. Even at school, for a time kids you never saw interact would be chatting in the hallway or at lunch. It felt like everyone in the whole USA was on the same team and it was something truly unique that I’ve never experienced since.

My most vivid memory of post 9/11 though was Mike Piazza’s iconic home run in the Mets first game back at Shea Stadium. I was a diehard Mets fan and watching the game in our playroom. With the Mets down 2-1 and Piazza at the plate with a runner on, I remember thinking “he’s gonna hit a HR. He has to. He’s Mike Piazza, if anyone can do it he can”. Then he hit the HR and I ran to the den to tell my dad.

It was sports at its absolute finest and most storybook.

🔥🦬 DANIEL MARKS HAS A PET PEEVE… AND IT’S A GREAT LESSON FOR ANYONE TRYING TO BREAK INTO SPORTS. 🦬🔥

You want to interview Daniel Marks about his career journey?

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. 👀

During Part 3 of the Daniel Marks interview, Daniel revealed one of his biggest pet peeves:

Someone reaches out saying they want 15 minutes of his time…

…and then opens with:

“So, what was your first job in basketball?” 😭

Daniel’s response?

“I’m done.” 😂

Why?

Because, as Daniel pointed out, you can find that information on LinkedIn.

What he REALLY wants to hear is something deeper.

Instead of asking what his first job was, ask:

👉🏾 What did you do during that first year that helped you earn the full-time opportunity?

THAT’S the difference.

It’s not just about knowing someone’s résumé.

IT’S ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY.

Daniel emphasized the importance of showing that you’ve actually researched the person, asking thoughtful questions, and demonstrating through your own experiences that you’re serious about working in sports.

And honestly…

THAT’S A MASTERCLASS. 🎓🔥

Whether you’re trying to work in basketball, sports media, coaching, scouting, NIL, or the front office — don’t just tell people:

“I love sports.”

Daniel’s challenge is essentially:

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SHOW IT?

Volunteer.
Get experience.
Shadow people.
Ask better questions.
Do your research.
STAND OUT.

🦬 That’s why the Daniel Marks interview belongs in the Best of the Bison Brothers Basketball Podcast Playlist. - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfDNuP4LV0IA&si=5j7fE0RZSd3nxpzS

Because you’re not just getting basketball stories.

You’re getting REAL-WORLD KNOWLEDGE FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN INSIDE THE NBA AND NOW HELPS SHAPE THE FUTURE OF HOWARD BASKETBALL.

👇🏾 QUESTION FOR BISON NATION:

If you had 15 minutes with Daniel Marks, WHAT WOULD YOU ASK HIM?
