Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing…(drum roll)…Aly!! šŸ˜ (Officially, Alice Palmer Nagle, a mixture of family names.) A long-haired Piebald/Dapple Dachshund advertised as a mini, maybe this time it’ll be true! 🤣 This 5-lb. ball of fluff arrived Friday from Missouri. She’s full of energy (Jen has already declared this is our last puppy!) when she’s not asleep! She loves exploring her new world but her sisters aren’t so sure about the situation. Brandi knows to be cautious (see the video in the yard!) but Carly seems to be equal parts incensed and despondent! She barely looks at Aly and runs from her! It’s tough going from being the baby to the middle child! Sage the Cat has been the best so far, willing to interact some. So wish us luck! by @dgnagle4

Along with all the flowers, it’s been a good summer for veggies at Farm 108. We’ve been swimming in shishito peppers, and enjoying plenty of jalapeño poppers, broccoli, raspberries (blackberries before that), cauliflower, and delicious potatoes. As for the artychokes, we were letting them get bigger before picking them, but then they flowered! by @dgnagle4

So my last post was a sad one, so now I want to lighten and brighten the mood with a look around Jen’s gardens of flowers (and veggies in the next post), her passion. Great and beautiful colors! And we’ve never had such robust coleus and ferns! by @dgnagle4

So, our house is a little quieter now. Doggie meal times a little less hectic. Our worries have been replaced by sorrow, mitigated — a bit — by 14 years with the funniest, sweetest, ball-obsessed #doubledappledachshund there ever was. Ellie. She loved food, hated walks, loved snow (see pic 12), and over time evolved from the spunky little provocateur (tormenting Sandee and greyhound Jaydee) to having to fend off the incessant insistence of ā€œlet’s wrestleā€ from Carly the last four years. (Pic 13 is a rare reversal of roles!).

Pic 2 is the moment I brought her home (from Houston!). 15 & 16 are the photos I saw online that convinced me to go there! Can you blame me?! No. 8 is this past Wednesday, as is 14, one last ball toss. 9 is a week earlier, after an overnight at @centralpetvet for a blood transfusion provided some hope. But it was short-lived. By Tuesday we knew what we were facing.

We said goodbye on Thursday, in the comfort of her own home, with the help of @pawsfindingpeace and the sensitive professionalism of Dr Lauren Atkins. She knew just what to say and do. For all of us. The next day they sent the poem, The Last Battle (last pic). It stopped us in our tracks.

So, farewell ā€œEllie Bellie.ā€ Hoping there’s lots of pizza crust and Whimzees in heaven. And tennis balls and racquetballs. Lots and lots of tennis balls and racquetballs.

RIP Ellie. 8/3/2012 - 8/13/2026.

What do you if you combine an old coat stand from your father’s office with a wide variety of press passes from your 36 years in @espnpr? A way to display them! (Actually, there’s none here from my first 15 or so years. So I’m missing a whole bunch of NASCAR including 4 Daytona 500s), the Indy 500, the 1993 Final Four, a few Great Outdoor Games (3 in Lake Placid and one in Reno), a few more NFL games, a couple more NBA games plus the Draft, and the Pilot Pen tennis tournament in New Haven.) by @dgnagle4

The college football and NFL seasons are a distant memory. So are college hoops, men and women. The NBA and NHL have each declared a champion. Three of tennis’s majors and all four of golf’s are in the books. Now the World Cup is behind us. What now is my excuse for not diving into my 2026 to-do list (see pics). Now, I’ve read many of what you see, but many more to go, perhaps now in the dog days of summer (until the NFL and CFB/Auburn seasons get underway).

An ancient Chinese philosopher wrote, ā€œA trip of 1,000 miles starts with a single stepā€ so with that in mind I’ve taken that first step. I’ve started Matthew Perry’s memoir. Very, very funny, but, of course, very, very sad. Especially now.

Let’s see how much I get accomplished before the football season starts up. by @dgnagle4

If it’s a big deal — and believe me, the G-Man’s birthday is a very big deal — you’ll find us at @jgilbertswoodfiredsteaks. Here’s our first round, my rack of lamb with spinach and mushroom risotto, video of our desserts that IG can’t accommodate, and a good look at how BFFs think alike. taken in Glastonbury, Connecticut by @dgnagle4

Sunday was one of the most highly anticipated days every year — the start of The Summer of Bob’s Corn @handelfamilyfarm 🌽. It was like Grand Central Station there that morning. So great to have the world’s best corn (plus tomatoes, other veggies and flower bouquets) just 30 seconds away! Pic #4 is that night’s dinner.

Then, the fruits of our labor at Nagle Family Farm… the first of our broccoli 🄦 (more to come), our complete 2026 harvest of white potatoes šŸ„” 😳😜, our first little artichoke, and as always we’re swimming in shishito peppers and jalapenos. by @dgnagle4

Fifty years ago today, my mom’s sister, Aunt Ruth, and I went to see President Ford speak in front of Independence Hall. Here’s our view. Then there was a parade up Market St. #bicentennial by @dgnagle4
