Group 8 was formed by Jagmohan Chopra in the late 1960s, when materials for printmaking were scarce and the print had no standing in the market. Its purpose was written down: a higher standard for the contemporary print and its maker, a well-equipped graphic workshop, exhibitions, talks, publications, and prints in homes and institutions. Members: Jagmohan Chopra, Jagdish Dey, Umesh Varma, Prashant Vichitra, Lakshmi Dutta, Yogshakti, Surinder Chopra and Anupam Sud, the youngest. Its shows ran at Lalit Kala Akademi and AIFACS — the same rooms this retrospective opens in.

Before an impression meets paper, an artwork takes shape in reverse on metal.
For a print maker, the zinc plate is a live collaborator.
Working on zinc offers an immediacy and depth that few other mediums match. Softer and more yielding than copper, zinc responds intimately to the needle and acid bath, allowing her mark-making to achieve a rare, luminous presence.
Under the weight of the press, these etched lines transfer seamlessly onto paper, revealing the nuanced atmospheric quality that defines her oeuvre.

Artisera and Dhoomimal Gallery present Intersections, a solo exhibition by Ashok Bhowmick on view at Artisera, Bangalore from 26 Sep – 5 Nov, 2026.
.
Ashok Bhowmick has spent more than five decades developing a distinctive visual language, most immediately recognisable through his extraordinary command of cross-hatching. ‘Intersections’ brings together recurring encounters within his practice: between observation and imagination, figuration and abstraction, precision and emotion, and the individual and the society to which they belong.

A pioneering artist of the Madras Art Movement, Naidu reimagined India’s mythology, temple architecture and sacred symbolism through a distinctly modern, cubist lens.

His flowing lines, bold brushwork and geometric forms deconstructed familiar motifs, creating a visual language that managedto make the ancient feel incredibly contemporary.

Rather than moving away from tradition, Naidu showed that it could be endlessly reinterpreted, proving that mythology evolves with every generation.

While history focuses on revolution and independence, simply surviving harsh social conditions was one of the most difficult struggles of all.

Haren Das’ woodcuts and engravings and Zainul Abedin’s unsparing black ink works capture intimate vignettes of rural Bengal as famine unfolded. Discarding Western oil traditions, both artists chose to bear witness to the lived reality of the ground.

Their work along with Chittaprosad and Sailoz Mookherjea confronted death head-on, capturing scenes the colonial state desperately tried to leave unrecorded.

Nandalal Bose took a different path—using quiet sketches of daily village life to keep rural India visible and preserved in history.

Dawn of an Age, on view at Dhoomimal Gallery through 8th September.

Beyond the frames on the wall, a gallery holds the living memory of art—the hands that made it and the historic rooms where it all began.

For ninety years, Dhoomimal Gallery has kept its own archive of photographs, exhibitions, artists at work, openings long past, faces that shaped Indian modern art as it was still being shaped. Photography does what memory alone cannot. It holds a moment exactly as it was, unedited by time.

Today, on World Photography Day, we open a small part of that archive.

Some of the most powerful records of India’s Independence were created by the artists who lived through it.

From the Bengal Famine to Partition and the years of rebuilding that followed, artists like Somnath Hore, B.C. Sanyal, Chittaprosad Bhattacharya, Sailoz Mookherjea, Sushil Sarkar and V.S. Adurkar captured a country undergoing profound change.

This Independence Day, Dawn of an Age brings together these works to trace that journey, from a nation confronting its past to one finding its way forward.
