Thinking of dear Stephen today, my youngest brother. Fifteen years ago today, he left this earth far too soon at just 38 years old. I miss him so. He had a wry sense of humor, and was also so kind and gentle. As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts, he died from a high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma. Until recently, it was what’s called an « orphan disease, » meaning there was little to no funding. Steve Jobs died of the same disease, but his was low-grade. Oddly, they both died on the same day. On that day fifteen years ago, an overcast day turned into a gorgeous late afternoon fall day. I was on Nantucket, where my brother and mother both lived. Just before dusk, a double rainbow appeared in the sky and left us speechless.

I can’t believe it’s been 25 years since September 11. On this day I am thinking of all the families who lost family and friends and all those who sacrificed their lives and health trying to save them. I was living on the south side of Williamsburg at the time, a block from the East River. I’ll never forget seeing the towers burning and falling on that fateful day from my bedroom/live space. I was working on ‘My Eye Travels’ that day, the piece pictured in this post. I also remember my amazing assistant, the artist and architect Andrew Chan (@andrewchanart), coming to work that day. He and his wife were living in Battery Park. They would become homeless for months, moving from hotel to hotel since their building became uninhabitable. I remember feeling that the fragility of what I was making eerily matched the fragility of all human creations, no matter how permanent they may appear. 💔 #september112001 #25years #fragility by @dianacooperstudio

I can’t believe ORANGE ALERT, my peripatetic installation piece that I started at a residency at the Wimbledon College of Arts in London @wimbledonual is relevant again. When I made this piece NYC was under Code Orange due to the war the Bush Administration had just started in Iraq. And here we are again, this time with the Trump Administration raging war again in the Middle East, this time in Iran. The idea of color coding fear was the impetus for this piece. I was also fascinated by the fact that this color coded system existed without showing actual colors. I first showed Orange Alert at Drawing Room in London @drawingroomlondon . With every install it changed, grew or shrunk according to the spaces. I showed it at 6 different venues in Europe before it came to the US where I showed it at @mocacleveland and @postmastersgallery.
