We’ve crossed over into a new year!šŸ„‚As I was recapping this last one, it became clear that while 2022 embodied much to grieve, it also carried so much to be thankful for! It would seem I’m pretty terrible at getting videos of the low lows but they sure were there and in ways that forced much surrender and learning to become a safe place for myself. As many faith-filled experiences as I’ve had, I don’t think I’ve fully learned to be safe and at home within myself. As I surrender to a new season, I feel like I’m truly coming home in a way and I’ll be bringing with me all that I’ve learned from this last oneāœŒšŸ» Thank you 2022 and welcome 2023-let’s do thisšŸ‘ŠšŸ»

Praise was the word I got for 2021...

It was the third day of the year, I was at my Dad’s house in California and the dog had woken me at 4am before anyone else was up. I sat on his sofa with some coffee and it came to me out of Psalm 22:22. I love how David navigates his pain and acknowledges his truth while coming back to praise over and over again in the Psalms.

I knew this single word was guidance for where to lead my soul and to get my next steps in the coming months. What I didn’t know was just how dire a strategy it was for climbing out of the depths in the months that followed. Still, I’m chasing this word now more than I have in all of the last nine and a half months!

As this desert of a year comes to a close, I want to leave it having learned to embody praise. I want to proclaim God’s goodness of character, greatness and perfection in the midst of my lowest moments, my biggest messes and my deepest fears. After all, is this not the greatest exchange of trust there is?

ā€œThe desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.ā€-Isaiah 35:1-2

Did you have a word for this year? If so, share your word in the comments below-I’m eager to hear what words have been influencing your year! taken in Lancaster, California by @dianamichellestudios

2021 was much more difficult than 2020 was for me. I interviewed for dream jobs that I didn’t land, I navigated deep relational trauma multiple times this year, my contamination ocd struggle was at an all-time high having major impact on my daily life and so on.

With exactly three months left in the year today, I’m reading the following scripture over my soul and the remainder of 2021. With all of the determination I have left, I remind myself to hope. With God, the most barren places can flourish; in fact, it’s his signature. I am hoping these last three months become the most productive and redemptive of the entire year!

ā€œI will make rivers flow on barren heights and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into springs. I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set junipers in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together, so that people may see and know,
may consider and understand,
that the hand of the LORD has done this,
that the Holy One of Israel has created it.ā€œ Isaiah 41:18-20

I assume 2020 will mark everyone’s life as a very difficult year but I want to hear your personal experiences in the comments: was 2020 or 2021 a more difficult year for you?

I didn’t used to like dogs very much but that all changed one day when this tiny little thing crept into my grandparents house through a cracked door and my younger brother @david.saw.this found her curled up on the stairs. My grandma had just passed away and we we’re visiting California for the funeral and to be with family.

Shyloh means ā€œHis giftā€ or ā€œsent oneā€ in Hebrew which I didn’t realize when I named her that week and convinced Cliff to take her back home with us but in many, many ways she has been just that: a sent comfort, companion and a teacher.

When I cry, she kisses my face until I have to stop and just laugh; she has embodied comfort time and time again. She’s been a cuddle companion throughout life’s ebs and flows for 10.5+ years with the best greetings each morning. She’s been a teacher in that she has helped expose a lot of the ways in me that need challenging to better prepare for motherhood.

The past couple years, she has challenged me the most but I am so grateful she crept into our lives that day! She makes adventures more fun, every day a little brighter and I don’t want to imagine a life where I can’t squeeze and kiss her teeny tiny body. Swipe to see the day I wish I took the time to brush my hair for the cutest photo of us! #nationaldogday taken in Vasquez Rocks by @dianamichellestudios

ā€œIt was a house church, he was a visiting Canadian wearing high-top hiker boots and when our mutual friend introduced him to me, I immediately blurted out, ā€œThat’s a really nice last name.ā€ I wasn’t thinking anything romantic about it at the time and only began to consider him a best friend in the months that followed but he quickly began to feel like home. Flash forward eight months of knowing each other and several affirmations from God later, we had a public wedding in an inner city park where we had been doing life with people and that really nice last name of his became mine too.ā€

We are supposed to be coming down from a Hawaiian island high in California right now. Cliff’s birthday was last week and we were supposed to spend the entire week in Maui with family! It was a rare opportunity to all be together for the first time in decades. I’m devastated we couldn’t go, especially since it’s not something we can reschedule right now.

In effort to focus on gratitude, I’ll be posting snippets from our Puerto Rico trip last September over the next month. I wanted to post Puerto Rican scenery to boost my spirits all last week but the week got away from me and a month of gratitude and island beauty sounds better anyways, right?

Remembering the incredible views that we got to witness will help me #getaftergrateful amidst current pandemic cancellations. Here’s to remembering good times and remaining grateful until the new ones arrive! by @dianamichellestudios

For over a month now, my thoughts and prayers have been for freedom from trauma, oppression and injustice for the black community. Needless to say, this past holiday weekend also held new perspective.

I haven’t said much on here during the current revolution for racial justice that’s been taking place since the death of George Floyd. Rest assured, though, it was never for a lack of movement. My personal movement wasn’t much expressed on this platform; instead I mostly used this platform to listen to the many voices, stories and thoughts being shared.

I listened, I interceded and I wept. I took breaks when overwhelmed, spoke with those closest me, analyzed the areas I could best advocate and most importantly, I was changed. The words that flowed out of me in prayer during these times will forever be etched in my soul, ā€œGod, heal generations of trauma at the cellular level.ā€ This is the level of freedom that’s inside the heart of God.

My heart echos with so many when I say: we are still listening with humility like never before. We hear you. We are with you. We are fighting for your justice, your freedom and your peace! by @dianamichellestudios

I had a big birthday yesterday and while it was storming for some of the day, I have been feeling pretty grateful lately to have been born in the Spring.

I didn’t feel that way when I was younger, though. Having grown up in Southern California, a beach or pool party was most desirable and my birthday was always a bit too chilly for those sunny celebrations.

As an adult, though, and especially as one who resides on the East coast where the seasons are thoroughly felt, I am especially appreciative now. Not only do we celebrate the hope brought to us through Jesus on Easter during the Spring but nature also follows suit by expressing its own story of hope after loss; hope is Spring’s theme.

I’m intentionally celebrating all the beauty, blooms and signs of hope this week because when you’re old, you get a whole week to celebrate, right?

Also, let’s be honest, April’s birthstone is diamond so there’s that too! by @dianamichellestudios

Most of my stories lately have been about healthy meals so I figured I’d remain predictable and post a plate here too!

I still avoid grains and refined sugar whenever possible (although COVID-19 has me cheating more than ever!) and since most ready-made foods contain these, much of my time is spent in the kitchen preparing meals.

Lately, having an apple first thing in the morning and then a big brunch later on has been bringing me joy during this isolation season. It sort of makes every day feel like a weekend and I have been all about sloooow mornings since birth!

What little routines are bringing you joy in this season? Comment below and let’s give each other ideas! by @dianamichellestudios
