Saxophonist Branford Marsalis and vocalist Dianne Reeves have released "Dedicated to You," the title track from their forthcoming John Coltrane tribute album, out September 18 to mark the jazz legend's centennial. The record reimagines the six standards from the classic 1963 Impulse album John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, alongside new instrumental takes on additional Coltrane compositions. Marsalis says he wanted "a road less travelled" for the tribute, landing on Reeves after realizing she has what he calls "the thing", a rare musical magic built from decades of deep listening. Reeves, who grew up loving the original Coltrane/Hartman album and honed her ballad instincts working as a teenager alongside Clark Terry, brings her own history to the material. Backed by Marsalis's longtime quartet with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner, the pairing sounds seamless from the first notes, and the two will take the project on the road together this fall, including a stop at the EFG London Jazz Festival on November 21.
