This is a new American style Mahjong tile set that I will not be purchasing. Why? Because for as much as I enjoy the rest of the illustrations on these tiles, this typeface choice kills it for me.

This display typeface resembles the “chop suey” style of typography, which has a long history of reducing Asian cultures to a visual stereotype. A more neutral typeface would have let the artwork stand on its own and avoid unintended cultural associations.

In this specific Mahjong tile, the artwork itself is elegant and references East Asian aesthetics. The “JOKER” type, however, introduces a stereotypical treatment that clashes with the sophistication of the illustration. A simple serif or sans-serif would likely feel more timeless and respectful while improving the overall design.

As a biracial Chinese American, I sometimes struggle with the choices some of these tile companies make. I’ve come to believe that privilege can create blind spots, and many of these decisions are probably made without recognizing the stereotypes they’re reinforcing. I don’t think the intent is malicious, but the impact is still real. Regardless, I don’t have to fund it. by @dib0nes

Last week I received my long-awaited Malachite tiles from @missmahjongofficial !!Woot!!

These tiles are larger and a little leaner than my basic beginner set, which I adore (see last two images), and it makes them easier to see and hold overall. They are 1.5” tall and clink like glass. And gah do I love that!

The tiles are etched and painted in such a way that I feel like I am looking at the artist’s sketchbook. Yes, there is a bird on the 1 Bam. “It’s great! But it’s not blue…” said Mr. Bones, in reference to the bird being a heron. The dragons aren’t my favorite as the heads get lost and they take a few moments to register. But you know what is my favorite? The one dot! I don’t frequently see a flourished one dot,and making the dots parasols is a lovely visual play.

The malachite backs are very rich and much more vibrant in person. The swirls have an iridescence that make the layer appear much deeper than they are. And you know it’s that red layer that begged me to pull out my credit card when this pre-order opened back in October. I’m too impatient to pretend I enjoyed the wait, but wow do I enjoy having these in my possession now!

I hope if you’ve read this far that you get a chance to play with these sometime. It’s pure joy.

Yesterday I received my Winslow 1920 tile samples from @ozarkmahjongg. I am absolutely smitten! I mean, I knew I would be from the pictures alone, but the feel of these in hand is a true tactile delight!

You can see in the last photo how these compare to the basic starter tiles. These are larger, although a little thinner, with crisper edges. These images are etched and painted with beautifully saturated paint tones that are just muted enough to feel timeless. Not new, not used—timeless. Don’t even get me started on the creamy white background, which is the perfect backdrop to let these tiny illustrations take the spotlight while also contributing to that timeless beauty.

Ozark Mahjong are true artisans and enthusiasts I only recently discovered in my new Mahjong pursuit. Check out their website for allll the details. As well as their other products and services. I’m still on the waitlist for news about the availability of this full set, but just had to have a tile or two to tide me over while I wait.

This isn’t a sponsored post in any way. Those who know me know how fed up I am with the baby shower palettes and tone-deaf cultural appropriation that tends to invade the design of the tiles in this country. Of course I felt compelled to amplify a company who produces and curates thoughtful, well-designed, creative pieces of art.
