..To Breathe

Before the island of Bali learned the language of spectacle, this house was already listening.

Raised in 1984 by local artisanal hands, Villa Puri Bayu rests above the Ayung River, not imposed upon the jungle, but received by it.

Here, air is architecture. Water is time. Light decides the rhythm of the day.

Nothing asks for attention. Everything participates.
Mist rises. Wind moves. The house inhales with the forest and exhales back into it.

This is not a place to be seen.
It is a place to remember how to move gently and breathe slowly.

The body does not heal. It obeys an ancient design, etched in ash, in shell, in silt. And the ocean. The ocean does not bear the body away. It claims it as kin.

Lucky Beach, Cape Le Grand National Park.

Some places are touched by fortune, where nature’s hand has been particularly generous. Places that hum with an ancient, unshakable magic, where the elements have conspired to create something so pristine, so achingly beautiful, that standing there feels like stepping into another realm. Cape Le Grand Beach, with its powder-white sand and turquoise waters, is one such place.

The sand, impossibly soft, melts beneath bare feet, while the Southern Ocean shimmers in shifting hues of sapphire and aquamarine. Beyond the shoreline, the granite peaks of Cape Le Grand National Park rise like ancient sentinels, their weathered forms whispering stories of deep time.

Yet, the true enchantment of Cape Le Grand lies in its solitude. Even at summer’s height, there are moments when you’ll find yourself utterly alone, save for the horses, dolphins and other little friends lounging lazily.. A quiet reminder that this place belongs first to the wild.

It’s in the hush of the evening breeze, the phosphorescent shimmer of the waves, the way the land holds its secrets close. Cape Le Grand is not just a destination, it’s a spell woven into the earth, waiting to be stepped into, breathed in, and remembered. @westernaustralia

CAPPADOCIA

Cappadocia rests upon the ancient Silk Route, that storied thread of exchange stretching from China to the Mediterranean. Over millennia, kingdoms rose and fell across this volcanic plateau, each leaving its trace in the stone. The first to claim it were the Hittites, an Indo-European people who settled here around 1800 BC. They discovered that the soft volcanic tuff yielded easily to their tools, and so they carved deep into the earth, shaping chambers, sanctuaries, entire worlds beneath the surface.

Among these hidden marvels lies Derinkuyu, once called Elengbu, a labyrinth that descends through eighteen tiers of tunnels, spiralling down some eighty-five metres below ground. It is said the Hittites began its creation, carving the first levels as shelter from the Phrygians who came after them. Those conquerors, in turn, expanded the underground cities, hollowing out vast realms of stone that later generations would inhabit and adorn.

Yet history alone cannot contain Cappadocia. It is less a landscape than a living reverie, a place where time itself seems to exhale. The valleys unfurl in shades of rose, amber, and ash. Rock spires rise like prayers. In their walls, forgotten frescoes fade but never vanish. When dawn arrives, the sky fills with slow-moving balloons, their colours gliding over the silent plains. For a moment, the world feels weightless, as if the soul too has lifted from the earth. To walk here is to wander through memory made flesh, where the ancient and the eternal breathe as one.

Cradle Mountain is A Realm of Untamed Beauty ..

There are places that linger in the imagination long after you’ve left them, and then there is Cradle Mountain, a landscape so raw and otherworldly it feels as though it exists outside of time.

Nestled within the heart of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, Cradle Mountain is a symphony of jagged peaks, ancient rainforests, and glacial lakes so still they seem to hold the sky. The air here carries the crisp scent of alpine flora, and if you listen closely, you might hear the soft rustle of a wombat moving through the button grass moorlands or the distant call of a black currawong.

For those who walk its trails, whether tracing the mirrored waters of Dove Lake or ascending to Marion’s Lookout, there is a sense of reverence. Every turn reveals a new tableau: mist curling over the ridgelines, sunlight catching the silver bark of snow gums, the ghostly silhouette of Cradle Mountain reflected in an icy tarn.

At night, under skies so clear they seem infinite, the mountain whispers its ancient stories to the stars. And beneath their glow, one realises that Cradle Mountain is not simply a place to visit, it is a place to be captivated, humbled, and transformed.

The Gentle Gardener.

There is a quiet wisdom in the things we so often throw away.
A banana peel holds the memory of sun, soil, rain and time; a soft archive of nourishment that still has more to give. When we return it to water, we are not simply making fertiliser. We are participating in the oldest conversation on earth: the one between what has lived and what is still becoming.

Soak the golden skins in two or three litres of purified or rain water and let them release their minerals slowly, like a final blessing. When you pour this enriched water over your herbs and vegetables, let it run gently from the crowns of the plants. They will drink it with quiet gratitude, recognising the familiar flavour of the cycle that sustains all life.

To garden in this way is to practise reverence. It is to understand that nothing is ever truly waste, and that every gesture of care returns to us in leaf, root and fragrance.
