When Passions Darken the Mind "We submit ourselves to our passions either out of laziness and inattention, or by God's allowance so that we may be humbled. The latter is useful for us; but the first two reasons are shameful and disgraceful. Yet there is something else we must keep in mind: the passions do not simply exist on their own-there is someone who stirs them up and inflames them. It is not only our negligence, but also the devil. Do you know that there is a demon of lust, a demon of gluttony, and a demon of rancor? What we feel within ourselves is not always natural. The devil exploits our natural needs in order to divert us from the right path and lead us into sin. This is why the Fathers of the Church, who knew this and struggled against the passions, would say: 'Uproot the thorns at their root, and you will see the serpent coiled at the bottom.' When the passions grow strong and reveal their power, the mind becomes darkened.
