Frieze NY | Booth C04

At Frieze New York 2026, Mitre Galeria presents works by Diego Mouro, including ‘Nego do Rosário, That’s Me’ and ‘To Unremeber I’, from the series ‘Blooming of Memory and Wind’, within the context of the curatorial project ‘Bodies–Territory: Essays of Tomorrow’.

Rooted in the traces of Afro-diasporic ancestry, Mouro’s practice unfolds as a poetics in which gesture, memory, and spirituality intertwine. Moving between muralism and painting, his compositions bring forth anonymous figures, ritual elements, and fragments of everyday life, suspended between appearance and dissolution, between the visible and the intangible.

In these works, painting operates as a field of reconnection, where the pictorial gesture becomes a thread linking past and present, activating what was forgotten and what insists on remaining.

A work does not come from nothing. We are a mixture of what we’ve seen, what we’ve absorbed, what has marked us, what we were, and what we would like to become. I continue with the idea of showing how the history of painting, and my studies of it, are referenced in my work.

Before being an artist, I am a painter, a student of painting, and deeply passionate about it.

I carry with me a lineage of painters who came before me—who walked this path, explored it, and developed tools that allow me to do what I do today. Whenever I can, I reference them in my paintings—their studies, their poses, their colors. I reference and honor their paths in the best way I can. They are part of who I am, and for that reason they shape me and my work. It only feels right.

I will try to share some of these references with you more often.

“In Brazil, devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary intertwines with Afro-Brazilian traditions and with ways of being forged through resistance. In the narratives of the Congado, the saint rises from the waters covered in flowers when called by collective song, by the sound of drums, by dancing bodies. As she emerges, she becomes a woman and dances among them — and what was once supplication transforms into celebration.

From this tradition emerge the Brotherhoods of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men, guardians of a religiosity shaped by celebration, care, and transmission. It is within this current that Mouro situates his painting, allowing popular faith to pass through pictorial matter and turn the canvas into a field of presence”

Diego Mouro | Northern Trust Prize

We are delighted to share that Diego Mouro has received the Northern Trust Prize acquisition award at Expo Chicago for the painting Indo buscar sá Rainha, which will now join the collection of The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

More than an image, the work stands as a tribute to the history of a people, to a faith that endures through time, and to a body of research built over years with rigor, attentiveness, and respect. It is especially meaningful to see this journey recognized and awarded abroad.

In the painting, a procession moves toward the waters to retrieve Our Lady of the Rosary, revisiting the narrative of the saint found at sea. The path crosses a field of flowers, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Here, however, the flowers do not fall from the sky—they grow from the earth and accompany the journey, reinforcing the connection between nature, devotion, and collective memory. In the artist’s words, it is urgent to live in a state of enchantment.

_________
