It was June 17 and the Lineage warehouse was in flames. The dark cloud covering much of Boyle Heights was so wide it felt as if it could swallow up the houses and church at St. Louis and 2nd streets.

Our reporter, Alejandra Molina (@alemolina), briefly stopped her car on the roundabout, grabbed her iPhone and snapped a photo.

The photo has since appeared in our stories about air quality, health concerns, and a monthslong cleanup.

Now, it has taken on a new life as a piece of art. On canvas, Los Angeles artist Diego Cardoso (@diegoartla) turned a moment of breaking news into a lasting memory of a defining event in Boyle Heights.

Industrial fire in Boyle Heights. This event is historic for significant impacts it created for the community and greater City and County of Los Angeles. There are significant industrial areas in Greater Eastside LA . When I was in high school industry in LA was just transitioning from heavy manufacturing of automobiles and aerospace manufacturing . This transition displaced heavy industries that provided employment for communities in and around the greater Eastside. Today many of the industrial areas have transition to goods storage and commercial light industries. Boyle Heights is mostly a dense bedroom community. They are surrounded by freeways and a new emerging transit. A strong cultural front and small creative businesses are surging. In this painting I decided to use a photo from journalist Alejandra Molina for creating my art. I am not painting a photo I am capturing the moment based on the industrial fire and her photo. I have researched and produced photographs to create what you see. Boyle Heights is a great cultural art stage and studio. Acrylic on canvas. 36X48 inches by @diegoartla

Czestawa Kwoka a 14 year old child and her mom were sent to Auschwittz. I saw a photo taken by a photographer prisoner for the Nazis . In a month later her mom was killed . Czestawa was killed not too long after. Most likely the photo i used as reference was taken when she arrived . The red patch under her number was places by the nazis for political prisoners. She was a catholic born on a small village in Poland. It is important to note that the nazis and Hitler created the laws to carry out the Holocaust in a few years. by @diegoartla

Night blues at the Rio Grande. An artist friend musician and school teacher asked me to create a painting. He had a dream of a family crossing the USA /Mexico border somewhere on the Rio Grande . A winter night . A car lights can be seen; a sigh of hope or capture. The evening is cold and the sky reflects the universal beauty of nature and the greater Universality of the Americas . I much enjoyed creating my friend’s dream …! by @diegoartla

From LA to Paso Robles voyage . I deconstructed the colors of landscapes into this painting . Winter morning voyage. The yellow green is the highway signs . This is an abstract realism study . I love the solitude of my imagination. Art allows me to enjoy the ordinary, the moment, a place , lightness or darkness . Acrylic on canvas 20X16 inches . by @diegoartla
