“Centuries”

A new song I’ve been working on with a really talented artist.

I had the chance to contribute to the music, production, mix, and master, and I love how this one came together. Deep textures, dynamics, and energy from beginning to end.

Sharing a minute of it here.

Today I created a song from nothing. No direction, no style, nothing. It had to be done, that was the only rule. Just reacting and building musical blocks. Music production, editing and mixing into the digital world 😜 taken in Miami, Florida by @diegophmusic

Same melody. Three different harmonic choices. Three different emotional outcomes.

That’s the power of harmony.

Many people think the melody is what creates the emotion in a song. But harmony is what gives that melody context, direction, tension, release, color, and meaning.

The melody gives you the words. The harmony gives them meaning.

And the possibilities are virtually endless.

Which version did you prefer? 👇 taken in Miami, Florida by @diegophmusic

Working on vocals is both a lot of work and a lot of shaping, but I consider it crucial in both the production and mixing stages. 🤓🧐 taken in Miami, Florida by @diegophmusic

Same vocal.

Same melody.

But two completely different emotional experiences.

When people think about production, they often think about better sounds, bigger drums, or more plugins.

But production is really about making creative choices.

Harmony.
Texture.
Space.
Sound selection.

Those choices shape how a listener feels when they hear a song.

In this example, nothing about the vocal changed. Only the world around it did.

People often think production is about plugins, gear, and what happens on the screen.

But every great record starts with a moment.

For this song, Michelle Luna de Fuego and guitarist Michel Gonzalez played together in the room, feeding off each other’s energy. We captured that first.

Then came the percussion, vocal overdubs, sound design, and the mix.

Not to replace the performance.

To serve it.

The music industry spends a lot of time talking about mixing and mastering.

But great records are usually built long before either of those stages.

In my experience, the hierarchy looks something like this:

1. Song
2. Arrangement
3. Performance
4. Recording
5. Production
6. Editing
7. Mixing
8. Mastering

Every stage matters.

But the earlier stages have a much bigger impact on the final result than most people realize.

Which one do you think gets overlooked the most?

One of the biggest mistakes producers make when hiring musicians is focusing only on how well they play.

I’d rather hire a great musician who also thinks like a producer.

Why?

Because they understand arrangement.
They understand the role of their instrument.
They know how to leave space.
They send clean files.
They make decisions that serve the song, not their ego.

A musician who thinks like a producer doesn’t just play the part.

They help solve musical problems.

That’s the kind of person I want on a session.

Do you agree, or would you rather work with the best player in the room regardless of their production experience? taken in Miami, Florida by @diegophmusic

This was fun! My amazing friend, singer, composer @miriammarofficial sent me a clip she made with her phone singing in a parking lot 😅. And produced this track to a weird vision I had. taken in Miami, Florida by @diegophmusic
