It was such an honor to be nominated for Best Soundtrack at the Sophia Awards for my work on the feature film Savannah and the Mountain. I would like to thank @academiaportuguesadecinema for the nomination and for their support throughout this trip.

Paulo Carneiro’s film has once again given me the opportunity to experience this kind of recognition for my work, and it’s yet another proof of how genius and relevant this film still is.

Just like at its premiere in Cannes in 2024, I felt incredibly proud of Paulo’s conviction in his work and vision, as well as the determination and strength of the whole team involved. I was also lucky enough to visit Portugal for the first time — the country where the film was shot — which made the whole experience feel like coming full circle.

As in many important moments in my life, I have to thank my family, and especially @m_placeres3 , for making me believe in myself and for practically forcing me to be present and fully live these incredible moments that art makes possible. Like other times when I hesitated, he gave me the confidence to move forward and overcome doubt - and also making sure that I was dressed properly for the occasion.

I’m featured playing keys on Björn Olsson’s new album. I wrote the arrangement and recorded it with my favourite instrument: the Sonola Electric Chord Organ. Before it made it onto Björn’s record, this organ went through quite a journey.
This photo was taken on my first day in Toronto a few years ago, the day after I got the instrument. I’d bought it online 6 months earlier, while living in Montréal. It was in New Jersey, so I asked the owner to hold it and promised I’d eventually pick it up. Some months later, visiting my uncle in Long Island, I figured it was the perfect occasion. I thought, ā€œNY, NJ... how far can it be?ā€ The answer: 5-hour drive.
I tested my uncle’s unconditional love with this mission, but he made it happen. We arrived at a mansion owned by an old Russian man. The Sonola was sitting in his living room like furniture, unpacked.
We carried this 20kg organ to the car, stopped at a gas station to find cardboard boxes, and did the worst packaging ever. I was leaving the US that night, so there wasn’t much time. My uncle dropped me in Manhattan, where I’d catch a Megabus to Toronto. With the organ and a huge suitcase, I assumed there’d be trouble, but told them I was a musician and they let me on.
In Toronto, my friend Marky picked me up on his scooter and burst out laughing when he saw me. He said there was no way we’d fit all of it, but he’d take the piano, because it seemed more fun. That’s how Mark made decisions back then: whichever was more fun and illogical, he’d go for it. I stayed at his place for 2 weeks, sleeping on the floor of his room. He was rehearsing with random bands and kept dragging me and the organ, unannounced, into their sessions. We’d haul it around walking or strapped to his scooter. Both were equally uncomfortable.
It went through 5 airports and got home safe without excess fees. In São Paulo, they refused both bags, so I opened my suitcase, pulled out clothes and shoes, choosing what to keep. I said I’d leave it all and take the organ. The scene must’ve looked very sad. A manager came down and told them to let me pass probably to stop them from looking like total dicks.
Since then, I’ve used it on most of my records. by @diegoplaceres

Tonight, I’m spinning some vinyl at @liseandvito in Brooklyn with @meshkimono. You might know Will for dropping the classiest beats to some of the most exquisite pop and psychedelic tunes of the 21st century. What you probably don’t know is that me and my fellows from @theroyalthieves were the ones who introduced him to the peculiar habit of drinking vermouth and vibing to El Sexteto Electrónico Moderno. Which is exactly what we’ll be doing tonight.

Iā€˜ve been a fan of Swedish music for longer than I can remember. At some point, I found out that most of the records that inspired me had something in common - they were produced and co-written by one man: Björn Olsson.

By the time I was 18 years old I was not only a fan of Björn’s work with Mando Diao, Håkan Hellström, Soundtrack of our Lives, etc… but was also amazed by the melodies and raw sound of his solo albums, which I listened to everyday. For this reason, around 10 years ago I sent him a letter, a few demos of my band @theroyalthieves and a jersey of Uruguayā€˜s national team, with his name OLSSON and number 10 on the back. To my surprise, Björn not only replied to my mail, but sent 4 vinyl records of his solo work all the way back to Uruguay. This meant a lot to me and we kept in touch, sharing ideas and thoughts, which also seemed crazy to me.

Two years ago I went to Gothenburg and hanged out with Björn, @m_placeres3 and @santip.odino in Tjörn and it was as if weā€˜ve known each other for a long time, which was true in some way. We gave him a Uruguayan mate šŸ§‰ and Mauricio taught him how to prepare it, a couple of mates after we were already close friends.

Following that trip to Sweden, Björn asked me if I could record a bassline to one of his new tracks. Itā€˜s hard to explain how honoured I felt to collaborate with one of my favourite artists, I recorded three bass lines for the track. All of them ended up in the final version.

The song was released this week, featured on Björn Olssonā€˜s new album. He named it ā€žDiego Placeresā€œ. The album sounds incredible and it was co-written and co-produced by Torsten Larsson, another Swedish rock legend. Go give it a listen!

Iā€˜m beyond grateful for this and I take it as a clear proof of how sincere love and passion for music resonates with those who think alike you.

Exactly a month ago, Paulo Carneiro’s « A Savana e A MontanhaĀ Ā» premiered at Cannes. I had the honor of composing the original soundtrack for this film. It was incredible to witness this project grow from the start and achieve such significant milestones, like being featured in La Quinzaine and screened at the ThéaĢ‚tre Croisette. I was fortunate to share this experience with the entire crew, some of whom I hadn’t met before, still we immediately became best friends and had the greatest time together.

I am grateful for Paulo’s vision, trust in my work and his unwavering determination. One night, when we were recording some of the music in Uruguay, Paulo said he was aiming for Berlin and I told him, obviously not as serious and determined as him, that the film would be premiering in Cannes instead. Little did we know… That same night, during our dinner break, we even bid on a USD 5k Rickenbacker bass on eBay—such was our optimism. Fortunately, someone else outbid me…

Most of all, I am so thankful for the wonderful people I met during the festival, truly beautiful and brilliant souls from around the world. I eagerly look forward to crossing paths with all of you again and I’m sure it will happen soon!
