The 25 year old Lina made a picture exploring the theme of empathy. For her, empathy means more than just kindness — it’s the ability to deeply understand and share someone else’s emotions. “It’s about feeling their pain and struggles, even if they come from a completely different culture than mine,” she says.

Empathy allows us to see the world through another person’s eyes. It helps us build deeper connections, create stronger bonds, and meet others with true compassion.

In Lina’s words:
“To become more empathetic, we need patience, active listening and openness. We have to move beyond our own judgments to make space for unity and compassion.”

Carina Armes' photographs address the challenges faced by people who do not feel aligned with their own gender identity.

To explore the diversity of gender identities, she met with Miriam, Christopher, Paul, Robin, and Nanouk in Vienna in 2022. “I visited each person in their home and discussed gender and identity with them. Then I photographed them in a way that made them feel most comfortable—in their own space, their safe space.”

Born in Salzburg and now based in Vienna, Carina often incorporates cultural and gender studies into her work as a photographer.

Her series offers an intimate look at the process of discovering who you truly are and what it takes to feel comfortable in your own skin. What defines a woman? What defines a man? What structures are necessary for a person to move freely and healthily in the world? These are questions the people in her series also grapple with, offering insight for anyone who knows the feeling of inner turmoil all too well.

Stella, 28, a documentary filmmaking student at HFF Munich and freelance photographer, has spent the past four months with Long Covid. After the photographer got infected with Covid-19 for the third time in August, their strength began to fade, and even small efforts became overwhelming, confining them to their home.

"For my birthday, my friends gave me a Polaroid camera. Both stayed—Covid and the camera," Stella says. "Week after week, I realized my strength didn’t return, my heart rate shot up with the slightest effort, and my lungs felt tight and too small."

With outdoor activities no longer possible, Stella found joy in photographing their friends who brought care and solidarity.

What began as simple documentation turned into something deeper. Each Polaroid captured a moment of strong connection, a testament to the loyalty of those who supported them during these difficult days.

"In difficult times, you realize who your true friends are," Stella says.

What is empathy? It’s the ability to understand how others feel and respond with compassion. According to the National Library of Medicine, empathy is a complex psychological process that shapes social interactions. It involves recognizing another person’s suffering and behavior, deeply connected to compassion.

In simpler terms, empathy means understanding why someone feels the way they do and finding ways to support them.

But is empathy something natural? And can we learn to be empathetic if it doesn’t come naturally? Lina Körner, an illustrator, wants to dive deeper into this topic and explore how we can cultivate (even) greater empathy. She’s also asking: Is there a difference in how we empathize with those close to us versus those we’re less connected to? And can empathy influence communication and the way we handle conflicts?

“Every picture tells of a moment that is fleeting yet meaningful - a small testament to human interaction that is touching in its simplicity and reminds us that despite all our differences, we are always connected.”

This is how 31-year-old Farhad Babayev explains what he saw, when he took these pictures in the streets of Berlin.

Farhad, who was born in Baku, works full-time as an architect in Berlin and is a photographer who captures urban life on the street in his free time. Doing something completely different from his day job.

The series "Alone Not Lonely" shows people moving around in public space, sometimes as individuals, sometimes in quiet moments of connection, but often in situations that emphasize the subtle contrast between closeness and distance.

“These images reveal the relativity of our feelings: the feeling of being alone among people, or suddenly feeling connected in the midst of the hustle and bustle of city life,” he says. “There are also situations full of joy and curious little scenes that reflect the city in all its diversity and contradictions.”

When multiple people live in the same building, a sense of community can emerge, as personal encounters are often inevitable in big cities. Humans are social beings, and even in urban environments, shared spaces or random interactions can lead to connections. Small gestures like a smile or the sound of laughter can create bonds. While some may seem independent, social interactions in various forms remain a part of daily life.

When 31-year-old photographer Arshia Maljaei lived in the Soho Suites in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2018, he began to engage more deeply with the people around him. The building transformed into a stage, with each window offering a glimpse into a unique scene, creating a symphony of human experiences. His photographs offer a window into the lives and stories of the residents, revealing a rich tapestry of human connections and shared experiences.

With his series Piano II, the Iranian-born artist aims to evoke a sense of connection and empathy. “I hope that as you immerse yourself in these photographs, you can almost hear the harmonious melodies of invisible octaves. May they remind us that beauty and inspiration can be found in even the simplest moments, and invite us to appreciate the rich symphony of life surrounding us, even when the sounds are silent,” he says.

People who are attracted to each other often feel an energetic pull — a physical or emotional connection acting like a magnetic force.

This invisible attraction between two people inspired the 24 year old photographer Annalena Sir to create her series "Magnetisierung". Using technical settings like a wide aperture, short focal length, and a shutter speed of 1/80s, she crafted images that capture the deep connection between two persons. It's that moment when your feelings for someone are so intense that time appears to stand still. Her goal: to create visibility for something we usually can only experience emotionally.

For the project, Annalena collaborated with two friends, Sophia (25) and Kaddl (24), a couple who explored their sexuality together. “Who would have thought you were so close?” they asked themselves when they realized their bond went beyond friendship. The photo series is a visual journey through the emotional process of two people discovering their love for each other.

The 24-year-old Lina from Germany spends up to 10 hours a day on her smartphone, mostly on apps like YouTube and Instagram. This constant exposure to social media leaves her often grappling with FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and the pressure of comparing her life to the seemingly perfect lives portrayed online. Despite using apps to manage her screen time, she finds it hard to cut back. During a camping trip, she managed to disconnect and enjoy life offline while immersing herself in nature. Here she is talking about her experiences, listen to her in English.
