How to use “time bucketing” to retire today.

The core concepts of the book Die with Zero by @billperkins are “time bucketing” and “memory dividends” and how the utility of money peaks at about 40, while everyone seemingly postpones their life for an imaginary and idealized retirement at 65.

But retirement is just when you stop sacrificing today for an imaginary tomorrow.

Instead of planning your life around accumulating money and saving your experiences for retirement when your body may not be up to it, spend now to get the “memory dividends.” Because you can always earn back money, but never time.

And money becomes less and less useful over time as your body & relationships change.

Some experiences belong in your 20s… this is the window of exploration, risk-taking, and budget adventure.

- Backpacking through Southeast Asia
- Hiking in the Patagonia
- Staying in hostels & on your friends couch in NYC.
- Taking risks & starting a business
- Partying until the sun comes up

Some belong in your 30s & 40s…this is the window of building & experiencing

- Spending time with your dogs & kids while they’re young
- Doing ski trips to Colorado as a family
- National Park roadtrips
- Wellness retreats to connect with others
- Visiting your parents as they age

Some belong in your 50s & 60s… this is the window of relationships & new chapters

- Walking & food tours in Europe
- Visiting your kids at college
- Family reunions with your siblings
- The big trips while your knees still work

Certain experiences have expiration dates. And more importantly, the same experience can have a radically different value depending on when you have it.

Climbing a mountain at 30 may be exhilarating. But at 75, it might be physically impossible.

Backpacking for six months is different when you’re young and unencumbered than when you have a demanding career and family responsibilities.

Traveling with your parents is an opportunity that may disappear sooner than you expect.

Having children while your own parents are alive creates a window for three generations to share experiences.

Don’t miss these windows sacrificing today for an imaginary tomorrow because it looks good by @diewithzero

“It felt like being struck by lightning.” ⚡

That’s how a cast member on Netflix’s Love Village 3 described reading Die With Zero. In a flashback scene, she picks up the book that changed how she saw her life, and shares the lesson she took from it: life has an expiration date, so enjoy the present and make memories.

Bill Perkins says he wrote Die With Zero to save lives. Not in a hospital. In the everyday.

Every year spent working for money you’ll never use, every trip postponed, every “next time” takes away from your life. The book is about getting those back: more walks in the park, more I love yous, more time spent on what actually fulfills you.

Send this to someone who’s drowning in the busywork.

At 80, nobody brags about their account balance. They tell stories.

The road trip. The early mornings on the water. The thing you finally tried instead of saving it for “someday.” Die With Zero calls these memory dividends: experiences that keep paying you back long after the money is spent.

Send this to the person you want to make the next memory with.

You’ve eaten near work, made your friends at work, built your whole routine around work. Then you leave, and you don’t know how to live.

Bill Perkins calls it being habituated. When work takes over every part of your life, retirement doesn’t feel like freedom. It feels empty. That’s the question Die With Zero asks: is the life you’re living actually fulfilling you, or are you on autopilot?

Send this to someone whose whole life is their job.

Bill Perkins thinks life is like Tetris: get the order wrong and you don’t get the high score.

He started working this out when he was broke. Back then it was a time problem: how much goes to work, to the gym, to nights out with friends. Later the pieces became time, money and health, and the high score became fulfillment.

Put the right pieces in at the right time. Some of them won’t fit later.

Save this for the next time you’re deciding what gets your time.

Move to the new city. Say “I love you” first. Run the marathon.

Bill Perkins’ message to anyone living a cookie-cutter life while quietly wanting more: the judgment you’re afraid of won’t matter at the end. The years you spent playing it safe will.

Send this to the friend who keeps saying “maybe next year.”

3 financial planners. 1 question: should you really try to die with zero?

None of them said “spend it all.” They said build your foundation first, then give yourself permission to live.

Save this for your next money talk, and comment the number that hits home: 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Most people inherit around age 60. By then, the house, the kids and the career moves are already behind them.

Die With Zero asks a different question: what if you gave while you could watch it change someone’s life?

Send this to the parent who’s “saving it all for the kids.”

Saving for later makes sense. Saving everything for later doesn’t.

Places will still be there when you’re 80. The question is whether your energy, your health and the people you’d want to go with will be. Some experiences are best while you can still fully enjoy them.

Die With Zero isn’t about spending it all. It’s about not letting “someday” turn into never.
