Last month we lost a man that I didn’t know very well but who has been very important to me over the last 22 years. Patrick Gleeson was the founder of Different Fur Studios, the place I’ve called home for my entire engineering career. After taking over the studio in 2007, Patrick, along with the second Fur owner Howard Johnston (who also passed away recently) made a point of getting in contact with me regularly. His emails always arrived unexpectedly with some story he had just remembered, passing along lore of the space and encouragement for managing to keep things going all this time. Something he had apparently never expected and which seemed to excite him. The day we finally met he was as sparkly eyed and positive as a person his age could be. For a while we just sat in the lounge and talked and while he seemed to absorb the place and what it had become. It’s possible that maybe the space was absorbing some of his energy as well. It’s hard to describe accurately what that energy was but he seemed to me to be a man genuinely curious and interested in learning everything he could with a little bit of mischief behind his eyes even in his 80s. He kept making music until his death transitioning from analog synths to a laptop and small mobile rig with which he kept performing live from time to time, often in noise show spaces and small DIY venues. When Grace and Lien took over the running of the studio, Patrick and Howard checked in on them as well, offering the same lore and encouragement they gave me. I will miss their check ins but I’m glad I got to briefly know them while they were around and while it’s sad to lose people like this, they lived long beautiful lives that left a great mark on popular music as well many of us personally

One last note: I have to mention Susan Skaggs here who also passed a while back because, even though I never spoke with her, she was very important to the success of this place and by all accounts was a booking genius as Studio Manager and kept the place packed to the gills with projects in the 90s. She was also responsible for returning all the gold and platinum plaques that you see when you enter the building by @differentfur
