What an amazing day at the Indigenous Farm and Food Festival!

Last week, we had the opportunity to join @sage_askiy and @bridgetolandwatersky on Day 2 of the festival, where participants explored soil chemistry, structure, texture, formation, sampling, biology, and wetland soils through our hands-on mobile soil stations.

We loved connecting with people from across the region and sharing conversations about soil science and stewardship. This collage features some of our favorite snapshots from the day and highlights the incredible engagement between our facilitators and the participants who made the event such a success.

The learning doesn't stop here! Give us a follow to catch soil-focused videos from this event over the next few months. 🌱✨

Congrats to Matthew for presenting his NSERC USRA summer research experience at the @usask_ursawinitiative Summer Symposium! He shared how our team's soil sampling across the Prairies is showing trends related to in-field and region-wide variability in soil salinity. This information can then be used to inform management practices. by @dig_soilscience

Looking for a long weekend activity? 😎 Hand texture your soil with some soil, water, and our free hand texturing key (find the link to it in our bio!)

The video features our summer student Kalla texturing soil at Ag In Motion. First, she checked to see if the soil could form a ball, then she made it into a ribbon and checked the length, finally she checked the feel of the soil in her palm. She decided the soil was a silty clay!

Knowing your soil texture is important for soil management as it impacts soil nutrients, water, and structure! 🪏🚜🌾

📢We’re excited to announce one of our ongoing projects – a soil interpretation guide for the Prairies! 🌾

The Soils of Saskatchewan website will have new releases starting this fall (https://soilsofsask.ca/index.php) with topics ranging from management strategies, to interpreting soil analyses. 🚜🔬

We're also still looking for volunteers with land for additional sample collection for soil health ratings. 🧫🪏🧪 Interested? Comment below, DM us, or sign up for our mailing list https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/PRXMJCG (link in our bio too!)

Proud moment for the DIGSS Research Team at CSSS 2026 👏

Our team had a fantastic time at this year's Canadian Society of Soil Science (CSSS) Annual Meeting. Breanna, Brittany, and Lainie each presented their research and participated in the Soil Judging Competition!

A special congratulations to Breanna, who was awarded the Ivarson Soil Science Scholarship — a well‑deserved recognition of her dedication and excellence in soil science.

Fieldwork doesn't stop at the field. 🧪🌾 While we're out collecting samples for our PPSN and HYDR projects, our lab crew is hard at work turning them into meaningful insights. Teamwork from field to lab—every step counts!

What we are up to:
Photo 1 & 2 - Cation exchange capacity analysis
Photo 3 - Soil extractions
Photo 4 - Texture analysis
Photo 5 & 6 - pH and electrical conductivity
Photo 7 & 8 - Weighing and grinding
