iykyk and if you don’t well… you’re just going to have to wait! Honestly it’s been in the pipeline so long you could say it feels like this is… *ancient life* at this point.

Original Paleontological Illustrations of [REDACTED] hand drawn by me, age 18, at 25x magnification (I think) approximately 8 years and a thousand lifetimes ago.

This is not a drill. It’s really happening!

This is also not a diagram, computer rendering, or some other thing, this is stipplework done with a micron pen, a microscope, and a teal-haired teenage paleontologist with perpetual patience to dot dot dot all day long. Feel free to drop in my DMs and interrogate me on that or pinch&zoom in on the crazy overlap between those two bones and stare at pointillism until the modern world loses all meaning!!

And before you ask - yes the fossils DO have weird jaggedy looking pieces there. The stipplework is shading though they are not polka dots.

In case I need to say this another way: I put every dot on that paper myself with my hand with a micron pen less than a millimeter wide. It took over a week staring through a microscope. Show your friends, but show them on your screen, not on your story, and please don’t feed my work through scraping tools. Thanks for understanding. A paleontological illustration of two overlapping jaw bones from a fossil fish in the shape of a T done in black and white line work shaded with stippling. Photo from 2017, inside the Dall Sheep diorama.

I don’t have words to explain every reason why the Academy is important. How it shaped who I am. I don’t have the energy to explain why closing the museum is monumentally pointless if the issue is money.

Frankly, I don’t know what I can do. But I can show you ANS through the eyes of a teal-haired teenager ten years ago. taken in The Academy of Natural Sciences by @digdinos12

This was NOT the big announcement that was coming this fall. Oops. Additional big announcements:

1. We’re moving to Colorado
2. We’re engaged (after 3 whole years of dating, it just took me a hot minute to get to instagram about it. This is my first reel someone tell me if I did it right?)

Due to point 1 our photoshoot for point 2 is just all the pictures we took on the infinite road trips you take while interviewing for a job and getting an apartment in a small town out of state. If the photo is shaky and looks like it was taken out of a moving vehicle or by someone who just hiked while carrying a cat, it was mine! If it looks like it could be professional and is a still photo it’s probably ©Matt Bade 2025 from sometime in the last few months.
It’s super on-brand for me that this is like, all landscape and wildlife shots except for the sporadic memes and murals and the one picture of our house and my ring, right? That’s like the most on-brand I could get here other than writing profound confessional prose in the caption?

In other news Napoleon aka Leo (Cat, not Pope OR Dictator) has learned to commit crimes in Colorado. Crimes which require incredible acrobatics to pull off, when his favorite activity in Arizona was “nap near mommy” so I’m looking forward to how winter goes when we switch from the electric stove he is currently jumping over to a wood burning one and Matt has to really put his foot down about where cats can’t be when cooking happens. If it sounds like I’m living in the wrong century wait until I tell you about the food. by @digdinos12

Behold: the least artistic shot I will ever post!

Today I taped up the first box for the move. I started packing weeks ago, but I kept leaving the boxes open in case I needed to add anything or remove anything. Today I took the leap of faith 'anything I need out of one of these, I can wait 3 weeks to retrieve.' Tape 'em up boys. See you on the other side.

This is much. Much. Harder than it should be. By this September I will have moved 12 times in the 6 years I've been adulting. I should be good at this by now. Most of the moves have been solo, frequently with assorted other unpleasant circumstances. (Shoutout to when I was briefly homeless in Philadelphia, and trying to 'move out' of an apartment to nowhere before a lease expired on the 25th!) I've moved in summer, winter, fall, and spring, rain, snow, extreme heat, ice, and persistent depression. I've moved so much, standing still is the hard part. This is the longest I've ever done that on my own. 17 months in the same ever-shittier apartment. The last 4 moves have all been local within this area too, I've been in SoDak for 31 months. That's long enough that I shouldn't be counting in months anymore, but I was in Philly for 29, so the margin is slim.

Am I hyperfixating on the stats to avoid the emotions of this? You betcha!

If anyone has any moving advice, even the wacky grandma advice, I'll take it now. as long as it's not a kanye lyric in a subtweet. My advice is this - have scissors on hand before you resort to cutting packing tape with a bic lighter.

As I was packing, the liner for my 180 gram vinyl edition of White Crosses fluttered out of the ether. (Pictured here, with an eclectic composition of my keys, an old receipt, and a dried ring of prawn masala on my coffee table)
And yeah, I am "looking for context and perspective" in all of this, raging against myself most of all, trying to find answers. Laura prays 'Saint Augustine, shine your light down on me' and he's the patron saint of sore eyes, so I guess I'll echo that too.

and, of course

—The world is holy! The soul is holy! The skin is holy!

Holy the vast lamb of the middleclass! Holy the crazy shepherds of rebellion!

Holy! Ours! bodies! suffering! magnanimity!—

Ginsberg might not have said it but I will: Holy the Hills of South Dakota!

It’s been forever since I posted but it’s been a good forever. Back to landscapes and feeling feelings just a little different this time. by @digdinos12
