The Indigenous Afro-Jazz Sounds Of Phillip Tabane & His Malombo Jazzman (Up Up Up – UPL 509 - South Africa - 1974)

This is the original South African 1974 second pressing of the album, originally issued in 1969.
Phillip Tabane’s distinctive guitar style sits at the heart of this remarkable meeting point between traditional Malombo music and South African jazz. His playing is highly rhythmic and hypnotic, with repetitive guitar patterns interacting beautifully with the percussion and creating a sound that is unmistakably his own.

The album captures Tabane and his Malombo Jazzmen at a fascinating point in the development of South African jazz, combining indigenous musical traditions with a sophisticated jazz vocabulary without losing its earthy, deeply rhythmic character.
Originally released in 1969, this copy is the later second pressing issued in 1974 on Up Up Up (UPL 509). An important distinction for collectors looking specifically for the 1974 pressing rather than the original 1969 issue.

A beautiful original South African pressing and an essential document of Phillip Tabane’s unique contribution to South African jazz.

Record is VG++, looks great, with one large but barely visible cosmetic hairline. It is not feelable and has no effect on playback. An actual sound clip of the record for sale is available in our Instagram post.

Sleeve is in strong VG+ condition, with light ring wear and light edge wear. No splits.

(Warner Bros. Records – 46 149 – France – 1972)

A cult Belgian jazz-funk title from 1972, Stream finds guitarist Philip Catherine exploring a more electric, groove-oriented side of jazz, with an excellent line-up featuring Belgian keyboardist Marc Moulin.

The album is particularly interesting for jazz-funk collectors thanks to three standout cuts: “Give It Up Or Turn It Loose”, a superb jazz-funk interpretation of the James Brown / J.B.’s classic; “Memphis Talk”, a deep, rhythm-driven funk workout with a distinctly early-’70s feel; and “Let’s Put It Like This”, a Moulin composition whose sound already hints at the cult fusion style he would develop with Placebo.
These tracks sit perfectly alongside the more jazz-oriented material, capturing the meeting point between sophisticated European jazz and the rawer groove language of early-’70s American funk.

A highly desirable record for Belgian jazz and European jazz-funk collectors.

Condition: Record is conservatively graded strong VG++ / EX — a few scarce non audible hairlines visible under strong light, plays well. Please check the actual soundclip of the record for sale on our Instagram post.

A cult rare French 45 RPM by François de Roubaix, featuring the highly sought-after dusty fingers style “Les Dunes d’Ostende”.

Built around a deep, instantly recognizable break, « Les Dunes d’Ostende” has become a cult breakbeat among hip-hop producers and sample hunters, its drums and atmospheric textures giving the track a timeless appeal far beyond its original soundtrack context.

De Roubaix’s distinctive cinematic approach is all over this recording: hypnotic arrangements, organic instrumentation and a beautifully moody atmosphere that make his music particularly attractive to DJs, beatmakers and collectors.

A genuinely scarce French 45 and a great opportunity to own the original source of a cult breakbeat with a strong connection to hip-hop sampling culture.

Pourquoi Pas ? – Il Etait Une Fois La Danse
(Barclay – 620.202 – 1976

The second time I’ve come across this ultra-rare, funky French vocal pop 7-inch, by an obscure band directed by Jean Bouchéty.
Bouchéty composed several film scores and was also a highly regarded arranger who worked with many major French variety artists of the era, including Michel Polnareff, Eddy Mitchell, Claude François, Éric Charden, Nicoletta, Michel Fugain, Mireille Mathieu, and Dalida.

“Il était une fois la Danse” is a fantastic groovy vocal-pop track, opening with a killer Latin-funk intro before breaking into banging drums and percussion, a great organ solo, and unison female-and-male vocals. A seriously funky and obscure French gem.

The flip side is a French cover of the British vocal group Guys ’n’ Dolls’ “There’s a Whole Lot of Loving.”

Condition: Record EX / Sleeve is strong VG++, in great shape, dedicated by one of the band’s members.

حسن أبو السعود = Hassan Abu Al Saoud – راسبوتين البلدي = Rasputin Al Balady
(Sout El Hob – 03 LP-SHB 356 - Egypt - 1982)

A very uncommon Egyptian release by composer, accordionist and arranger Hassan Abu Al Saoud, bringing together traditional Egyptian melodies, orchestral pop, electronic keyboards and the rhythmic sounds of the period.
The LP includes “Salma Ya Salama”, the celebrated composition by Sayed Darwish, originally written in 1919 and subsequently recorded by numerous Arab artists, most famously by Dalida.

Another particularly interesting track is “Tigy Ya Hawa”, a genuine slice of Egyptian disco, driven by its rhythmic arrangement and electronic instrumentation. Alongside the title track “Rasputin”, “Trik Trak” and “Al Souq Al Horra”, it shows the more dance-oriented side of Abu Al Saoud’s work.

A revealing example of the way older Egyptian repertoire coexisted with the modern electronic and disco sounds of the period. Original Egyptian pressing on Sout El Hob.

Record is strong EX (Swipe for actual audio clips) / Sleeve is excellent condition (with only very very light wear on spine)

Ahmed Abdul-Malik – East Meets West: Musique Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik (RCA Victor LSP 2015 – US - 1960)

A fascinating and adventurous piece of late-50s jazz from Ahmed Abdul-Malik, originally released on RCA Victor in 1960.
East Meets West is a remarkable meeting point between Middle Eastern musical traditions and hard bop, with Abdul-Malik’s oud and exotic percussion set against an extraordinary jazz line-up featuring Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller and Jerome Richardson.

The album moves between hypnotic Eastern melodies, deep rhythmic passages and swinging jazz, creating a unique and highly atmospheric sound. “E-Lail (The Night),” “Searchin’” and “Isma’a (Listen)” are particular highlights, while the haunting “Takseem (Solo)” adds an even more exotic dimension.

A beautiful and unusual record for collectors of spiritual jazz, exotic jazz, modal jazz and early East/West fusion — and a great opportunity to hear some major Blue Note-era players in a very different setting.

Original US RCA Victor stereo pressing – LSP-2015 from 1960 is in close to perfect condition.

Essential French Soundtrack composed by Francis Lai for Henri Verneuil’s 1976 crime drama starring Jean-Paul Belmondo.
Far removed from being merely background music, Lai delivers a wonderfully atmospheric score that moves effortlessly between melancholic orchestral themes, elegant cinematic jazz, lush romantic passages and seriously groovy jazz-funk moments.

The main theme immediately sets the mood: sophisticated, nostalgic and slightly dark, with that unmistakable Francis Lai melodic touch. But the real surprise comes from the more rhythmic pieces. “Magic’s Power,” “Number One” and “Jack Pot” bring a completely different dimension to the soundtrack, with funky grooves, stylish arrangements and a distinctly mid-70s European soundtrack feel.

A sought-after French OST and a great one for fans of French funk, jazz-funk, rare groove and 70s cinematic music.
