Even as a beatmaker panning is king for mixing! Not hating on stereo wideners, but this shit helped me a lot! Shoutout to @thehouseofkush for the concept

Sampling is so much more than stealing. It’s an art form grounded in the roots of hiphop that has now become a common element in all forms of modern music.

When I was in music school, we had a debate about sampling in one of our classes. We were discussing the artist Girl Talk and his creation process. Another student said “He’s not doing anything! He’s just taking other people’s work, it requires no skill compared to practicing an instrument for 6 hours a day.”

Quite a lot of ignorance from someone who had never even attempted music production. Music producers spend just as much time honing their craft and some of the most iconic songs would never exist without sampling.

“Sampling is hard” (9th wonder). It takes time to learn how to repurpose another source of music. Whether chopping, looping, stretching or just taking a 1 shot, the creativity and vision required is just as valid as any other form of music creation. It’s the ability to make something starting from a place other than your own ideas.

Sampling is the ultimate form of respect to previous generations of music. So many artists have found a resurgence of popularity when music heads go deep and find the original songs artists used to sample. It’s a way of allowing a listener to almost travel in time and get a feeling of another generation within current music.

Thankyou for reading if you stuck around through my Ted talk😅 And what is sampling to you?
