This comeback started before the motorcycle. I tried and failed in 2020 and health problems stopped it — 280-plus pounds, major nervous system issues, unable to balance, fully control my body, unable to coordinate walking and many everyday tasks.

The work came first: overcome that shit, claw back to fighting shape, restart BJJ, get back into bikes. Then, 20 years after I stopped, restart at the track.

Fifteen track days later, the first season is in the books.

Honored to be granted 3rd degree black belt today. I counted over thirty northwest black belts and unknown large number of students. It is amazing how the Gracie Barra team and family have grown over the 20 years that I have been part of it. Much gratitude to @rodrigolopesgbseattle and Carlos for leading and growing the community and long time friendship. So good to see the new professors and students promoted. Gratitude, and a dedication.

To my wife, Tania — endless love, support and encouragement. She trusted me and supported me to do a dangerous thing. Not once did I hear “be careful,” “that’s crazy,” or “you’ll kill yourself.” Many said some version of all three.

This season is dedicated to Jerron Lowe and Lindsey Johnson. Two supermen. Two close friends, both gone this year. Losing them is what made me take the leap and go all in. Life is short.

I carried them with me all season, in various ways. Lindsey’s ink is on my arm. Both improved me as a man. Both, I’ll carry in my heart.

For Jerron and Lindsey.

I am grateful for three 1:1 coaching days with Gavin Soderholm. Every one led to a new best and improvement of fundamentals and a lot of fun.

The biggest gains came from fundamentals: lean, body position, head position and feet and not looking at traffic. Follow-and-pass drills fixed where I looked. Reviewing every session on video made the mistakes difficult to ignore.

Direct, confrontational and effective. Also, regular threats involving a rusty spork.

The best moment of the season was riding with Mark and Gavin on Sept 28, then watching the video of Mark (with a passenger) repeatedly trying to pass for a lap and hearing him say it was nice riding.

One-on-one coaching was the number one reason I improved this quickly. Gavin is a tremendous rider and fantastic coach. Hire him!

Clearly some subconscious forces are whispering, no yelling, that I want to ride dirt bikes. 2nd off @oregonracewaypark during @2fasttrackdays . I am a continuous improvement and no excuses kind of learner and often learn the most by picking apart my mistakes. Here - riding intermediate group, where my pace is regularly faster than most of the field - I let speed differential get me in trouble. Tons of traffic headed into the slowest corner on the track, I am on a pace that feels good for me. and I made the the wrong call to pass several people before corner which left the door closed for me on corner entry. Rather than abrupt adjustment and trying to dive into traffic just - eject, eject, eject -
Go straight off again, no front brake in dirt, no sudden steering adjustments. And think about where I f’d up. Only two incidents for me weekend. #ducati #v4r #akrapovic #trackday taken in Oregon Raceway Park by @digiigid

Multiple little mistakes compound. 1. Chasing a faster time - tried to get clear track for one or two flying laps and be first out. Clear track and acceleration down front straight - great. Irrational exuberance has me overcook my braking point, traffic on left has me start hard braking on the seam and lose grip for a moment where you see the bars shake, compounded with worrying about traffic at turn in. First session after lunch, body and mind cold. Not gonna make T1 - let’s explore the Oregon outback and safely reenter track.
