On this Saturday morning, we collaborated with Professor Thaddeus @ethaddeus from Columbia University GSAPP @columbiagsapp and his studio to co-create future NbS Placemaking visions for Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis, at the Museum of Climate Change @mocc_cuhk by Digital Common(s) Lab @digital_commons_ We set out to push the boundaries of how ecological and AI knowledge can be shared and democratised with students from CFSS. In just three hours, their ideas stretched far beyond what we imagined. One standout concept: the SEABIN — an integrative design with bio-planters engineered to filter mercury and heavy metal contaminants from aquaculture systems. Another group wove their own futures into the vision, proposing a cascading university city. It hosts integrative bio-design programmes, while its upper terraces welcome wetland birds, turning the structure itself into a vertical wetland to increase service / surface areas for high density eco-cities. A daring, bold proposition — who says we cannot? This is where the power of AI tools shines: they help us imagine and diversify possibilities, opening up a wider spectrum of options before we lock into final decisions. Innovation thrives exactly within this unbounded space of potential. Three hours is nowhere near enough time to refine careful, resolved design choices. But as a rapid show-and-tell exercise to grow our collective “idea bank”, the greatest takeaway is this courage to think outside the box — and that is exactly what we are working hard towards. As Prof. Thaddeus proposed: a single design may fail, yet a “portfolio” can foster an ecology of solutions, learning from investing banking risk-management to insure our future through design. #NorthernMetropolis #WetlandConservation #EcologicalDesign #AIForEcology #Bioremediation ClimateAction HongKongDesign StudentCoDesign by @digital_commons_
Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of working with four students from Victoria Shanghai Academy in Hong Kong on the design and fabrication of a floating platform prototype with a coral nursery beneath, situated along the waterfront of Wah Fu, Hong Kong. Throughout the process, we explored how emerging digital tools could support creative design workflows—from using AI-generated imagery for early design exploration to experimenting with vibe coding for wind simulation. The project eventually took physical form through 3D printing and hands-on assembly at their school, bringing our digital explorations into a tangible prototype. by @digital_commons_
[Visiting Scholar] - Dr Provides Ng Theme: Eco-AI Hackathon [Seminar] - 26 October 2026 (Monday), 2:30pm – 3:30pm The deeply complex interrelationship between computation and nature is marked by a fundamental paradox: while digital technologies promise new modes of ecological awareness and representation, their material infrastructures—data centres, mining operations, and energy grids—enact direct environmental harms including deforestation, industrial pollution, wastewater discharge, and substantial operational and embodied carbon emissions. This hackathon works with participants to critically reposition computational creative practices within these ecological contradictions. [Workshops] – 28, 30 October 2026 (Wednesday, Friday), 2:30pm – 5:30pm Workshop 1 on 28 October Moving beyond traditional eco-data visualization and fictional thematic creation, the workshop explores the entangled duality of digital computation in the Anthropocene. By centering human authorship and responsible AI augmentation, the project seeks to give an expressive voice to overlooked ecological agencies while critically confronting the inherent environmental costs of its own computational production. The hackathon thus fosters a reflective, ethical, and ecologically grounded model for contemporary. Workshop 2 on 30 October Tech-art practice—one that acknowledges the extractive logic underpinning AI systems while exploring pathways toward more sustainable, transparent, and accountable creative workflows. [Brainstorming Session] – 2 November 2026 (Monday), 4:30pm – 6:00pm (academic staff only) Venue: Jockey Club Future Laboratory of Arts Tech (Room S303) , 3/F, South Tower, PolyU West Kowloon Campus Registration: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/wRJxF0B6da or scanning the QR code in the poster above. @polyu_cpce @polyu_speed @polyu_hkcc @polyu_cpce_design #VisitingScholar #PolyUSPEED #PolyUCPCE #CPCE_SSHD by @digital_commons_
【ROOTELLIGENCE Highlight: “Avian Cartography: Mapping the Unseen City” 🌿🤖 Vol. 9】 Welcome to Part 9 of our 10-exhibits feature series!
