Afterward, online posts portrayed Venezuelans as celebrating, although fact-checkers found that some widely circulated footage was old, misleading or AI-generated.

The broader issue goes beyond one chatbot or administration: AI-generated analysis can sound authoritative while social media simultaneously supplies apparent evidence supporting it. Regardless of what a model predicts or recommends, consequential government decisions remain the responsibility of the humans with the authority to make them.

Cybersecurity startup DepthFirst demonstrated how an AI model specialized for vulnerability research could help uncover a flaw involving TikTok. In a controlled demonstration, not an attack on an actual TikTok user, a researcher was able to remotely access the camera roll of a test phone browsing the app. The vulnerability had previously been disclosed to TikTok and fixed.

The bigger issue is what happens as AI lowers the cost and difficulty of finding software vulnerabilities. These tools can help legitimate security researchers protect users, but increasingly accessible capabilities also raise questions about what motivated attackers could eventually do with similar technology.
